The upcoming new generation of 2020 Mahindra Thar will reportedly come with a petrol engine mated to an automatic gearbox, alongside a diesel engine.
Mahindra is going to launch the new Thar at the 2020 Auto Expo. The new-generation SUV will sit on a completely new platform that adheres with the safety norms. Also, the Thar will look completely different from what we have now.
Zigwheels reports that the new 2020 Mahindra Thar will come with a petrol engine onboard. So, the Thar will be offered in two engine options – a 2.2 Litre petrol engine from the XUV500 and a new 2.0 Litre turbo-diesel engine.
Not only that, but the petrol engine will be mated to an automatic gearbox only. In short, the new 2020 Mahindra Thar will come in two options – 2.2 Litre Petrol/6-speed AT gearbox and a 2.0 Litre diesel/6-speed manual gearbox.

The petrol engine on the XUV500 produces 150 BHP and 300 Nm of peak torque. The 6-speed AT will also come from the current XUV500. The 2.0 Litre diesel engine, on the other hand, will produce somewhere around 140 BHP and 350 Nm of peak torque.
While sitting on a completely new body-on-frame platform, the upcoming Thar will also get the basic safety features. The list will include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, speed alert system and seat belt reminders as standard. We can also expect a rear parking camera to come on the top-end variants.
Inside the cabin, you can also expect a completely new look with a touchscreen infotainment system, multi-function steering wheel, new AC vents and more. From the outside, it will look like one of those old-school SUVs with big 17-inch wheels and off-road friendly bumpers.
