The new Maruti S-Cross with a BS-6 compliant 1.6 Litre diesel engine has been spotted fresh. This engine might also come on XL6 and the upcoming Vitara SUV.
It looks like Maruti is not going to discontinue its diesel cars anymore. While it already indicated that it might continue with the 1.5 Litre diesel engine once its demand rises. Now, it actually seems to be working on an entirely different BS-6 diesel engine.
Gaadiwaadi has spied the BS-6 Maruti S-Cross Diesel being tested with the emissions equipment and without any camouflage. The small 1.6 badging on the boot lid confirms that it is indeed the earlier discontinued 1.6 Litre DDiS diesel engine being tested.
To be noted, Maruti S-Cross when first launched in India, came with this engine itself. The 1.6 Litre diesel engine from Fiat produced 120 BHP and 320 Nm of peak torque. It came mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

On the spy shot, there is no camouflage suggesting that there will be just an engine update. With some new features, Maruti might launch the BS-6 compliant S-Cross diesel in India next year.
As of now, Maruti is going to ditch the 1.3 Litre DDiS diesel engine on S-Cross and replace it with the 1.5 Litre petrol engine. Yes, for some time, the S-Cross will be available only in petrol. The 1.5 Litre unit produces 102 BHP and 138 Nm of peak torque.
The new 1.6 Litre diesel engine is likely to come on other premium models as well. Reports suggest that the new XL6 and upcoming Vitara SUV might also get that engine. We are not sure what Maruti has in the offer for other big cars in its lineup.
