After a lot of speculation and rumors about the arrival of the MG ZS EV, the company has confirmed its unveil in December with a launch scheduled in early 2020.
There has been a lot of confusion about when the ZS EV would finally arrive in our country. Now, MG Motors have finally confirmed in an official statement that the ZS EV would be unveiled for the Indian Market in December, 2019. This will be the second offering from MG Motors in India. The ZS EV is however already on sale in international markets like the UK, Thailand and China. It will be launched in India in early 2020.
The ZS has already been spied testing in India several times. MG has even started trail production of the car in their Halol plant in Gujarat from June. The ZS EV will come to India via the CKD route to keep costs in check. MG has also said that they will reach out to their Indian target customers and educate them about electric vehicles, also addressing concerns like range anxiety and charging infrastructure.
Looking at the dimensions of the ZS, it measures 4,314mm in length, 1,809mm in width and 1,620mm in height. That makes it a tad bit larger than its closest rival – the Hyundai Kona. It will be powered by an electric motor that can produce 150 hp and gets a 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack that gives you a range of 262km on the WLTP cycle (335km on the NEDC cycle). Charging times are claimed to be 7hrs using a 7kW AC charger and 40mins (from 0-80 percent) using a 50kW fast DC charger.

Range anxiety still remains the biggest problem with electric cars. In order to address this problem, the company is working towards ensuring a viable charging infrastructure at select dealerships. They will also be setting personal charging stations in the homes of the prospective customers. The brand has tied-up with eChargeBays, a Delhi-based start-up, to assist its customers with last-mile assistance in setting up EV charging infrastructure at home.

The MG ZS EV will initially be sold only in five cities – Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad – until better infrastructure has been set up in the rest of the country. The Hyundai Kona is the closest competitor to the ZS EV and it is priced at Rs. 23.71 lakhs. MG is expected to keep the pricing very competitive, around the Rs. 22 lakh mark.
