Honda has sold nearly 14 lakh units of the Activa in the last six months alone and that is despite the slowdown in the auto industry, making it the best-selling two-wheeler in the country.
The Honda Activa has for long been the best selling two-wheeler in India. And it continues to be so up until the second quarter of the current financial year. The auto industry has seen a drastic slowdown in the past one year but inspite of that, Honda has managed to retain the top spot for the Activa, selling almost 14 lakh units in the first six months of the current financial year.
To give you more precise numbers, the company has sold 13,93,256 units of the Activa from April to September. To give you some perspective, that’s an average of five new Activa customers riding out of Honda showrooms every minute. According to Honda Motorcyle and Scooter India (HMSI), the company has more than doubled its production plan to meet the overwhelming demand for the Honda Activa from all regions.
Currently, Honda sells the Activa in three different variants here in India. First, there’s the standard Activa 5G, then there’s the Activa 5G Special Edition with a 110 cc engine. Finally, there’s the Activa 125 with a new fuel-injected engine. The Activa 125 is also the first two-wheeler from Honda to be BS-VI emission norms complaint which are coming into effect from April 2020.

Its been almost two decades since the Activa was launched in India in 2001. The Activa brought a new life to the scooter segment in India as the Indian two-wheeler market was increasingly moving towards motorcycles by the turn of the century. The Activa’s unisex appeal, ease of operation, and convenience has since then brought converted millions of two-wheeler consumers into scooter buyers.

It was in 2016-17 when the Activa claimed the top-spot as best-selling two-wheeler in India for the first time. This spot was previously held by the Hero Splendor for 17 long years before the Activa dethroned a motorcycle to take top-spot for a scooter. Sales of Honda Activa alone contributes to 14% of the domestic two-wheeler industry, and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India is the undisputed market leader in the scooter segment with 56% market share.
