The Volkswagen T-Sport boasts of a coupe-like roofline and is based on VW’s MQB AO platfrom. If launched in India, it will be the only coupe-SUV in the segment.
Volkswagen has started development on their smallest SUV in their global lineup. This new Volkswagen will perhaps be called T-Sport and it will be unveiled globally next year. This new coupe-SUV from Volkswagen boasts of a stylish coupe-like roofline. A sketch of this SUV has recently emerged on the internet through a twitter post by Jürgen Stackmann, a member of the manufacturer’s board.
The design of the Volkswagen T-Sport has been inspired by the Volkswagen Coupe SUV concept that was earlier shown at the Shanghai Motor Show. The T-Sport will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MQB AO platform for the emerging markets, just like the India-bound T-Cross SUV. The sketch posted online confirms the coupe-like silhouette for this new SUV.
The Volkswagen T-Sport will have a similar wheelbase to the current-gen Polo that is sold in the international market at 2,560mm. It is expected to be a under four meters in length and if its launched in India, it will sit right in the compact SUV segment, only with the differentiation of having a coupe-like design. It would then take on the likes of the Ford Ecosport, the Hyundai Venue, and Maruti Brezza in the Indian market.

That aside, what we do know is certainly coming from Volkswagen and its sister brand Skoda are four new models under Volkswagen’s India 2.0 strategy. First in the line will be India-spec Skoda Kamiq SUV which will be shown in concept form in India early next year, perhaps at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Volkswagen will also be bringing the T-Cross SUV in India and they will also be replacing the ageing Vento sedan sometime in 2021. The T-Cross will come with a 1.0-litre and a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine in India while a factory-fitted CNG kit is also expected to be on offer as an option. The Volkswagen T-Cross and the Skoda Kamiq will rival the likes of the Tata Harrier, the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta in the Indian market.
