BWM is readying a brand new entry level SUV that will sit below the X1 in the company’s lineup and will be called the Urban X. Yes, it breaks away from the nomenclature too.
There are rumours that BMW might have a new baby SUV in the model range. BMW already has an entire array of SUVs from the X1 to the X7 but this new model will sit below the X1 in BMW’s lineup. This new compact SUV will be called the BMW Urban X, and even before you ask it, yes its a break away from BMW’s traditional SUV nomenclature.
The fact is SUVs are hugely popular these days and even more so is the compact SUV segment. It thus becomes quite difficult for luxury car manufacturers to ignore this segment. In fact, 45% of BMW’s total sales in the first half of 2019 have come from SUVs. That’s also a 10% increment from what was sold last year.
The BMW Urban X (pronounced as Urban Cross) is expected to measure about 4.1-4.2 meters in length. In context, the X2 which is currently BMWs smallest SUV measures in at 4,360mm long. It will retain all of BMW’s trademark styling cues including the new bigger kidney grille and slim LED headlamps. It will have sharp styling and will be immediately identifiable as a BMW SUV.

The BMW Urban X will be based on the firm’s smallest and latest architecture, called UKL2, which is a front-wheel drive platform. This being a brand new car on a new platform, the platform is already equipped for electrification. The BMW Urban X has possibilities of a mild-hybrid system, a plug-in hybrid or even a fully electric set-up. BMW has certainly kept the future in mind while developing this car. Also, thanks to a wide range of models in BMW’s portfolio, the Urban X will also see sharing of a lot of parts.

The plug-in hybrid or the fully electric versions could get four wheel drive on account of an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. As for the combustion engine, it could use BMW’s 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine which is used in the X2 and it sends power to the front wheels. The BMW Urban X is meast to take on the likes of the Audi Q2.
