According to the Maruti Suzuki sales report for June, all passenger vehicle segments recorded a decline in sales except for the mid-size sedan segment of the Ciaz.
Another month goes by and car sales still seem to be in an all-time low. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car maker has announced their sales report for the month of June and yet again, its not positive. Maruti Suzuki recorded a decline of 17.2% in June 2019 selling 111,014 units of passenger vehicles in the Indian market against 134,036 units of vehicles which it sold in the same month last year.
Overall sales in the April-June period stood at 363,417 units which is a decline of 20.8% when compared to the same period last year. The entry level segment which has cars like the Alto and previous-generation WagonR took the biggest hit recording a decline of 36.2%, selling only 18,733 units as compared to 29,381 units which were sold in June 2018.
The compact car segment which includes high-selling cars like the Dzire, Swift, Baleno and the new WagonR among others was down by 12.1%, selling 62,897 units as compared to 71,570 units which were sold in the same month last year. The Utility Vehicles segment with cars like the Vitara Brezza and the Ertiga also recorded a sales decline of 7.9% selling 17,797 units of vehicles against 19,321 units which were sold in June 2019.

The Vans segment also recorded a decline of 24%, selling 9265 units against 12,185 units which the company sold in June 2018. However, the Ciaz mid-size sedan is the only car which saw a positive growth of 47.1%, selling 2322 units as compared to 1579 units sold in the corresponding month last year. The commercial vehicle segment also saw an increment with sales of the Super Carry being up by 24%, selling 2017 units as compared to 1626 units that were sold in the June 2018.
The Indian automotive market has been low since the beginning of this current financial year itself. Customer sentiments have been poor due to increased prices and low credit availability and sales were also largely set back by the Lok Sabha elections in the previous month.

Maruti Suzuki’s double-digit decline in sales also shows that overall volume in the PV segment will likely be subdued in June as the company accounts over half of the market share. They even had to shut down manufacturing for seven says due to poor demand. Officials in the industry body expect a gradual improvement which will only happen over a period of time.
