The new BMW 3-series which is now in its 7th generation has been completely re-engineered from grounds up. Its more luxurious and drives better than ever.
BMW will be launching the next-generation of the 3-series sedan in India on August 22, 2019. The new 3-series was first shown at the Paris Motor Show last year and the 3-series is currently in its seventh generation. It has been completely re-engineered this time around from ground up and it offers so much more than the previous generation. With the new BMW 3-series launch, it will go against the Mercedes-Benz C-class, the Audi A4, the Volvo S60 and the Jaguar XE.
The new BMW 3-series is based on the brand’s CLAR architecture which also underpins the 5-series and the 5-series. Naturally, the size has gone up and the new car is now 76 mm longer with the wheelbase longer by 41 mm than the predecessor. The 3-series has also shed 55 kg weight and has now has a drag co-efficient of 0.23 cd. BMW say that the torsional rigidity has gone up by 25%, with up to 50% at certain places.
In terms of design, the new BMW 3-series is much sharper and bolder than before. The grille seems to be inspired from the 8-series and has certainly grown larger at that. There are new LED headlamps with L-shaped DRLs and a rather interesting kink in the headlamp cluster which immediately sets is apart. It also feature’s BMW laser light technology.
The signature Hofmeister kink continues in the new 3-series as well but in the C-pillar instead of the doors. Another interesting feature is self-levelling hub caps on the wheels, much like Rolls-Royce cars. At the rear, the tail lights have been redesigned and they look similar to the one on the 5-series.
On the inside, the new BMW 3-series adopts the latest BMW interior design language with the best of materials being used. The cabin now gets an all-digital instrument console with a HUD, memory seats, electric sunroof, keyless entry, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant. It is also more practical than before with better space management and offers 11 mm more legroom with improved head and shoulder room at the rear.

As for the powertrains of the new 3-series, it will get a 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel engine options, all of which will be mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. India will get the rear-wheel-drive version of the sedan, while BMW also retails the xDrive all-wheel-drive version globally. The car has a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and the spring rates have also been stiffened by 20% for a better driving experience.

The new BMW 3-series will be marginally more expensive than its predecessor when its launched in August. The new 3-series is part of the 12 new cars that BMW plans to introduce in the current fiscal year. Prior to the 3 Series, the automaker will be bringing the all-new X7 SUV and the 7 Series facelift to India on July 25, 2019.
