The Mahindra XUV300 AMT will use a 6-speed AMT unit and will be offered only with the diesel engine, at least initially. A petrol AMT might come later.
We had already reported that Mahindra will be launching an AMT with the XUV300 very soon. It had been spied several times and we even reported a walk around video by a blogger from a Mahindra dealership. Now, Mahindra has announced that the XUV300 AMT would be available only on the diesel variant.
While it has been confirmed that the top-spec W8(O) variant would get the AMT, it remains to be seen if Mahindra offers the AMT is the lower variants – W4, W6 and the W8 – of the XUV300. At the time of the launch of the XUV300 at the beginning of this year, Mahindra had said that they would be launching an AMT version of both the petrol and diesel variants. That promise does not seem delivered, as of now at least.
The Mahindra XUV300 uses a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine which produces 117 bhp of power and 300 Nm of peak torque. This engine already came mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and its the same engine that does duty in the Marazzo as well. The new AMT gearbox in the XUV300 is a six-speed unit.

As for the price of the Mahindra XUV300 AMT, it is likely to command a premium of about Rs. 50,000 in the top-spec W8(O) variant. The current diesel manual W8(O) variant is priced at Rs. 11.99 lakhs, ex-showroom. The XUV300 diesel AMT would then become the most expensive diesel automatic SUV in the segment.
In terms of competition, other sub-4m SUVs that come with a diesel automatic combination are the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Tata Nexon. Both come with AMTs like the XUV300. On the other hand, the Hyundai Venue and the Ford Ecosports have petrol automatic along with the Tata Nexon’s petrol AMT. The Hyundai offers a 7-speed DCT whereas the Ecosport has a traditional torque convertor.

While chances of the petrol-AMT option in the XUV300 is scarce, a more powerful petrol version of the XUV300 is currently under development and we believe this version could be the one that will be offered with the AMT option. Meanwhile, the diesel AMT of the XUV300 would be launched soon.
