The third-generation of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR was introduced in January, and since then, the WagonR has already crossed the 50,000 sales mark in just four months. Much like its predecessor, the third generation of the WagonR was also received very well by the country.
However, comparing the sales of the previous generation WagonR and the new WagonR for the same period last year and this year, the sales have been 15% lower and this is not what Maruti had expected. In fact, Maruti had even expected the WagonR sales to be so high that it would boost overall sales of the company. On the contrary, Maruti’s sales for the month of may continued to depict a 20% decline in y-o-y.
The rivals haven’t been doing great either. The Tata Tiago saw a 15% drop in sales from this time, last year and while there was no Hyundai Santro on sale this time from last year, the Santro also continues to report drop in sales over the last few months.
In spite of declining trend in the industry, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR sales has kept ahead of the competition. The sales recorded a notable increment for every month since January except for a downfall in May. Sales in February, 2019 stood at 15,661 units while March sales went up to 16,152 units. Sales went down in April to 11,306 units but recovered in May to 14,561 units, also making it the fifth most sold car in the country for the month of May.

Maruti says that the WagonR is no longer a low cost budget car as the previous generation WagonR. Instead, it has improved handling, a better design and also much better equipped interiors as well. Of the competition, the Tata Tiago is the most affordable.
