Here we have drawn a comparison between the MG Hector and the Tata Harrier, two brand new, mid-sized, five-seater SUVs to see who fares better with the level of equipment and overall feel of the cabin.
The mid-size SUV segment has seen quite some activity in the last few month. A few months ago, it was only the Jeep Compass that sat quite prominently in this segment of mid-sized, five-seater SUVs. There was also the Hyundai Tuscon but it didn’t quite shout out its presence.
In the last couple of months, this segment saw the launch of the new Tata Harrier and the MG Hector. It will also see the Kia SP SUV being unveiled very soon. These mid-sized SUVs are also bringing in a host of features to the catalog, some of them segment firsts as well. Here we have drawn a comparison between the MG Hector and the Tata Harrier in terms of their features to see who fares the better.
MG Hector vs Tata Harrier – Interiors

In terms of the interiors, both the SUVs have pretty appealing interiors. The MG Hector uses an all black theme for the interiors with soft-touch leather upholstery. The dashboard is dominated by a large 10.4 inch touchscreen infotainment system and buttons have been kept to a minimal. That gives a neat and uncluttered look the dashboard but some drivers might find it inconvenient to resort to the touchscreen for all functions as it requires you to take your eyes off the road for that.
Quality of materials used and general levels of fit and finish are top notch otherwise. Also, it gets a funky looking digital-analog instrument cluster. The MG Hector also benefits from the largest panoramic sunroof in the segment, owing to its longest wheelbase. The sunroof really lightens up the space in the cabin which otherwise might have appeared quite dull for the all-black treatment.
However, the biggest highlight for the Hector has to be iSmart system which gets internet connectivity and a host of other online features that comes along with the internet. The Hector also have the best in-class cabin space, again owing to that long wheelbase. Even the second row of seats has oodles of space.
The Tata Harrier on the other hand has quite a conventional dashboard layout. It gets a large enough touchscreen and adequate number of buttons for easy access to basic car controls. Even fit and finish and general level of quality of materials used will defy all preconceived notions about the brand.
Tata Harrier
The Tata Harrier has a more traditional dashboard layout. It gets a decently large infotainment screen but also some buttons for easy access to basic car controls. The fit and finish and general quality of materials used will defy any preconceived notions about the brand. The dashboard layout is also very aesthetically pleasing.
The Harrier does not get internet connectivity or the best in class space like the MG Hector but it sure does have an upmarket feel about its cabin. The oak wood palette used on the dashboard and the soft-touch materials used at most places give the Harrier a very premium feel to the cabin.
The Harrier gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for connectivity options and the default infotainment system for the Harrier is also pretty decent. It has sufficient space in the second row and is a very comfortable SUV indeed. Overall, it is the cabin of the Harrier that feels better of the two to be within. One thing that really stands out in the Tata Harrier is its JBL sound system which is certainly the best in class.

In the end, both cars are very well equipped and the competition here is really neck and neck. The MG Hector has the edge in terms of features and space whereas the Tata Harrier edges ahead with its overall feel, ergonomics and quality of materials used. To choose between either of these, it really depends on personal taste and what exactly one is seeking from the car. If you are techy, you will like the Hector a lot. The Harrier is more traditional and classier that way too.
