Toyota India does not have an SUV in the price bracket of Rs. 10 to 15 lakhs as of now and the cheapest SUV which Toyota India has to offer is the Toyota Fortuner which is a premium SUV and costs way more than the SUVs which are more popular in India in terms of sales numbers. The popular ones being Mahindra Scorpio, newly launched Mahindra XUV500, Tata Safari, upcoming Renault Duster and recently launched Skoda Yeti 4×2 which is slightly on lower price bracket. While Toyota has Toyota Innova which is a MPV but it has more of a people carrier appeal and is not a sporty SUV vehicle.

Toyota India is doing a studying the low cost SUV based on modified Toyota Etios platform. The low cost SUV will be priced under Rs. 12 lakh price bracket and will be a nice competitor to the popular selling SUVs in the Rs. 9 Lakh to Rs. 13 Lakhs bracket. The Etios platform has been originally developed few years back considering specially the Indian road and driving conditions. The Toyota Etios Liva hatchback and Toyota Etios Sedan has been doing quite well in India for Toyota and the modified Etios platform may work our really well for the compact SUV of Toyota India.
Toyota is not alone which is temped to enter this segment, Renault is soon to launch Renault Duster SUV priced close to Rs. 10 lakhs in India, Maruti Suzuki will be presenting its SUV concept in Auto Expo 2012 which will go into production by late 2013. The small SUV segment is hot in India as the purchase power of the SUV buyers is still good even amidst the small car sales on a down trend. The sales of luxury cars and SUVs in India has not seen a decline as sharp as the small cars.
