Given its dimensions, a 7-seater MG Hector wouldn’t be much of a task for MG Motors. And to our delight, the company has already confirmed one by early 2020.
The MG Hector is a rather large SUV for the mid-size SUV segment it sits in. It is 4,655 mm long and with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, it is already bigger than its rivals which include the Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and the Mahindra XUV500. The MG Hector is big enough to make it look like it belongs to a segment above. This, of course, raises a question is most people’s mind – will it come with a 3rd row of seats?
The MG Hector has been unveiled as a 5-seater version but MG Motors have confirmed that they plan to bring a 7-seat version of the Hector in the year 2020. Autocar India has reported that Rajeev Chaba, MD and CEO, MG Motor India, has confirmed to them at the unveiling event of the MG Hector that the brand plans to launch a 7-seat version of the Hector by April, 2020 by when the BS-VI emission norms become effective.
“Technically, we cannot call it a 7- or 8-seater due to its dimensions, but the Hector will get a third row of seats and that should come around the same time as the BS6 emission norms come into effect,” said Chaba.

It should be noted that a 7-seat version of the Baojun 530 SUV already exists, on which the Hector is based, and is already on sale in China. There is no difference in the dimensions of the 5-seater and 7-seater versions of the 530 SUV and MG Motors should easily be able to fit a third row in the Hector without making any major modifications to the SUV. The Hector already has a massive 587 liter boot space which can accommodate an extra row of seats which will certainly add to the practicality and appeal of the vehicle.
Even Tata showcased a 7-seater version of the Harrier at the Geneva Motor Show which was titled the Buzzard and that too is expected to come sometime next year. The XUV500 already comes with 7 seats and it will only be the Jeep Compass which is unlikely to ever come with 7 seats.

The MG Hector was revealed in full yesterday, at Mumbai, marking MG Motors’ first vehicle in India. The Hector comes with a lot of segment first features like the panoramic sunroof, 360 degree parking camera, mood lighting and of course, the eSim connectivity with the title of being the first internet car of India.
The 7-seater version of the MG Hector will be powered by the same set of engines that powers the regular Hector – a 1.5L, 143 horsepower, turbo petrol, a 2.0L, 170 horsepower diesel engine and a 48V mild-hybrid version of the 1.5 turbo-petrol unit. Transmission options of a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT are likely to remain the same as well.
