The Tata Altroz diesel will be powered by the same 1.5L diesel engine from the Nexon but in a slightly detuned state. Petrol engine will come later.
While most manufacturers are considering gradually phasing out their small capacity diesel engines before the BS-VI emission norms come into effect from April, 2020, Tata Motors plans to launch the new Altroz with a diesel engine. In fact, at launch, the Tata Altroz diesel is the only variant that would be available to customers. A petrol engine will also be offered but that’s only some time later.
The Tata Altroz diesel will be powered by the same diesel engine that does duty in the Tata Nexon but in a slightly detuned version. The 1.5-litre Revotorq turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine produces 110 PS of power and 260 Nm of peak torque in the Nexon.
However, in the Altroz, it will churn out 93 PS of power and 210 Nm of peak torque. While the Nexon comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Altroz will get a 5-speed manual transmission.
The petrol engine which is due at a later stage is again a detuned version of the 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged three-cylinder unit that powers the Nexon. The detuned engine is expected to churn out 102 PS of power and 140 Nm of peak torque. That engine too will come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
There have also been rumours of a 1.2L, naturally aspirated, petrol engine that could come paired with a dual-clutch transmission.

The Tata Altroz features the new Agile Light Flexible Advanced (ALFA) architecture which has been developed in-house. It is also the second car after the Harrier to boast of the new Impact Design 2.0 philosophy.
Tata aims for a five-star safety rating for the Altroz and we can expect it to come with at least six airbags, adjustable head restraints, and ABS with EBD. It will also come with premium features like projector headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, semi-digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android.

The Tata Altroz will go against the like of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Hyundai i20, the Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo. It is the petrol engine that is more popular in this segment and it would be interesting to see how the Tata fares with a diesel engine at launch.
This is also Tata’s first time entry in this segment and Tata is even developing an EV variant of the Altroz. With the launch slated in July this year, there is much buzz and excitement around the car right now.
