The Mahindra XUV 300 is going to launch in India on the 14th of February 2019. It is expected to be priced in-between the range of INR 8 lakh to INR 12 lakh. With this, this new sub-4-meter offering from Mahindra is going to compete with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and the Tata Nexon which are some of the well-established names in the said segment. Going by the initial reports, it seems that the XUV 300 is going to be a very potent product. However, is this really the case here? We get down to the details and find out if this compact SUV from the homegrown automaker is all that it promises to be? Based on SsangYong Tivoli but an all-new offering!
As you must be aware, the Mahindra XUV 300 is based on the same X100 platform as that of the SsangYong
Good quality materials used inside the cabin!
Despite being placed in the sub-compact SUV segment and despite being a Mahindra product, the quality of the materials used inside the cabin of this vehicle is surprisingly quite good. All the touch-points inside the cabin offer decent feedback. Also, the feedback from the various buttons and knobs is also quite positive. That said, you can still find some hard plastics used in the lower portion of the dashboard and central tunnel.

Plenty of storage space onboard!
The cabin of the Mahindra XUV 300 offers plenty of storage space onboard. There are large enough door-pockets, central tunnel offers decent sized cubby holes while there is a large enough glove box for storing small kick-knacks.
Offers a vast equipment list!
There is no doubt about the fact that the Mahindra XUV 300 is amongst one of the richly loaded compact SUV in its segment. The top-spec variant comes with features such as an electric sunroof, multi-mode steering wheel, leather upholstery, projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, auto-dimming IRVM, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, mood lighting, 7-inch-touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto to name a few.
Comes with quite a decent safety equipment list
As standard, the Mahindra XUV 300 offers dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors along with disk brakes on all four wheels. Top-end variant comes with features such as additional side and curtain along with knee airbags, front parking sensors and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Looks disproportionate when viewed from the side!
Though looks are subjective we believe that most of you are going to agree with us on this that the Mahindra XUV 300, when viewed from the side looks quite disproportionate. The rear overhang looks rather flat since the the SUV has to adhere to the under-4-meter mark to get the required tax rebates.
Outdated dashboard design!
One area where the interiors of the Mahindra XUV 300 lack are in terms of offering a ‘good-to-look-at’ design. The layout of the dashboard, though simple and ergonomic, looks a bit outdated in comparison to what the competition has to offer, especially the screen and the controls for the air-con control module.

Not enough legroom at the back!
Though the Mahindra XUV 300 boasts of the segment’s largest wheelbase, the same does not translates into offering a decent enough legroom at the back. Though the space for an average sized Indian is just about enough, two six-footers sitting back to back would be highly uncomfortable. The same can turn out to be a nightmare especially on longer journeys.
Small boot with a high loading lip!
Just like the rear legroom, the space for luggage is just not adequate for an SUV of this size. Though official figures are not out yet, one can clearly see that the Mahindra XUV 300’s boot capacity will struggle to fit in the luggage even for those short weekend trips. Not only this, but the rather high loading lip will result in an extra burden on your spine.

Diesel engine not responsive enough below 1,500 rpm!
The Mahindra XUV 300 comes with the same 1.5-litre diesel engine which currently powers the Mahindra Marazzo. However, in here, the power output has been reduced to 115 BHP in comparison to the MPV’s 120 BHP. That said, this engine seems to have no grunt below the 1,500 rpm mark and things only get better after the said limit when the turbocharger cuts in. And after that, when the turbo does cut in, there is a sudden burst of power and you have to be quite careful to manage the throttle so that you do not end up hitting the car up-front!
