Mahindra and Mahindra is finally going to announce the name of the much awaited S201 compact SUV on the 19th of December 2018. The homegrown automaker is subsequently expected to launch this vehicle in India sometime during the first half of 2019.
Ahead of the official revelation of the Mahindra S201’s name, there have a been a number of speculation regarding the same. Since the news got out that Mahindra is working on a Maruti Vitara Brezza rival, there were rumours of it being named as the XUV3OO.
However, recently, there were several media reports stating that the Mahindra S201 compact SUV be called as the Inferno. Which one out of these two makes more sense? Well, we all will know the answer soon enough!
Talking about the vehicle itself, the Mahindra S201 is based on the global spec SsangYong
Being a sub-4-meter SUV, the Mahindra S201’s primary competition is going to be the current segment leader, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Mahindra’s offering in this segment will have to compete with a satwart as the Brezza, despite having just a diesel derivative in its portfolio, sells considerable more than the competition.
For this, it seems that Mahindra has ensured a tough fight as they are going to load the S201 with a plathora of features and creature comforts. For instance, this SUV is going to come with LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and several other segment first features.
The Mahindra S201 is going to launch in India with both petrol as well as diesel engine options on offer. The petrol derivative is likely to be a 1.2-litre unit while the diesel engine is going to be a 1.5-litre oil-burner.
The petrol engine is expected to produce a power out put in the range of 100-120 BHP with peak torque figures ranging from 140-150 Nm. The diesel engine on the other hand, will be capable of churning out 120 BHP along with 300 Nm of peak torque.
We expect Mahindra to employ a 5-speed manual gearbox in the petrol derivative of the S201. While we are almost certain that the diesel derivative is going to come with a 6-speed unit. So far there has been no concrete information regarding an automatic variant of this compact SUV. However, considering the fact that the competition does offer two-pedal variants,
Finally, talking about the prices, we thing that Mahindra is likely to keep them very aggressive. The homegrown automaker has done the same in the recent past as well, take for instance the Alturas which considerable undercuts the competition. Keeping this in mind, it would be safe to say that the prices of the Mahindra S201 compact SUV are likely to fall in-between the range of INR 7 lakh to INR 10 lakh.
