The upcoming Hyundai Carlino compact SUV could get an electric variant in its lineup. The Carlino SUV will most likely launch in India by April 2019. This EV will launch after the Hyundai Kona EV, which is launching next year.
Hyundai has made its plans for its upcoming compact SUV very clear and will launch it by April 2019. Codenamed as Hyundai Carlino (Styx), it squarely aims at the success of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, and Tata Nexon. At the launch event of Hyundai Santro, top Hyundai official commented about their EV plans. Young Key Koo, MD and CEO of Hyundai Motors India said to ET that it might consider an all-electric variant of the upcoming Hyundai Carlino compact SUV. You can read more about the Carlino here.
Hyundai has planned a couple of EVs for India. First, it will launch the Hyundai Kona E-SUV, which was recently spotted testing for the first time on Indian roads. The Kona will be bought as CKD units from South Korea and around 1000 units have been slotted for the Indian market.

Following this, Hyundai plans to launch a mass-produced EV in India. For that, it may consider a full-electric variant of the Hyundai Carlino. However, the EV variant might launch later in 2020. This EV will be locally produced and will be priced according to the target masses.
The Carlino will look similar to the Hyundai Creta, and will actually look like its younger sibling. Since it is Hyundai, you can expect premium features and some segment first features onboard as well.

As per the latest Government norms, the Carlino will have dual front airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and speed alert indicator as standard fitments across all variants. It might get some additional safety features as well.
According to a number of recent reports, Carlino will reportedly get a 1.0 Litre turbocharged petrol unit. Otherwise, it could get with the 1.2 Litre Kappa VTVT petrol engine. The diesel engine will be a 1.4 Litre U2 CRDi engine, as seen on the i20. The diesel engine puts out 88.7 BHP and 220 Nm of peak torque.
Transmission options could include a 5-speed MT along with Hyundai’s new in-house developed AMT for the petrol variant. The diesel engine could pair up with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The Hyundai Carlino is expected to be priced between Rs 7 Lakhs to Rs 11 Lakhs (ex-showroom prices).
