Skoda Rapid might get a new 1.0 Litre TSI Petrol engine, as it has been spotted testing with the new engine. Currently, the sedan gets a 1.6 Litre MPI petrol engine. This engine comes in latest Volkswagen Polo and Ameo.
Skoda Rapid is the entry-level Skoda car in India, until its hatchback, Fabia was shut down. Unlike the other models in the lineup, this one has a decent share in its segment. Skoda has always maintained its high standards with comfort and features being its USPs. Currently, Volkswagen and Skoda are in partnership to manufacture cars in India. They both sell rebadged cars of each other. The Vento is the mechanical sibling of the Rapid. Same engine and same transmission, just different looks and features. Rapid now has a 1.6 Litre MPI petrol unit and 1.5 Litre diesel unit under its hood. Recently, the Skoda sedan was spotted testing with a 1.0 Litre TSI petrol engine, which is the smallest one and runs on the new Polo and Ameo.

The new 1.0 Litre TSI Petrol engine is developed by Volkswagen and recently featured in the Polo. For petrol, the 1.6 Litre MPI and 1.2 Litre TSI are allocated. Polo, Fabia, and Karoq use the turbocharged version of this engine. This is a turbocharged unit with expected power figures between 95 BHP to 115 BHP. Well, rarely has any hatchback in India crossed 100 BHP power mark.

Mainly, this engine will be compliant to the BS-VI Emission norms. So after the introduction of norms, Skoda and Polo would not have to update many of their cars. This engine will be further developed for the use of Vento, Octavia and other cars of Volkswagen and Skoda. Vento currently also uses the 1.2 Litre Turbocharged petrol unit as an option.
Recently, Skoda has announced its plan in the India 2.0 Project. During which they talked about their plans for 90% localization of these engines for a competitive pricing. In future, all the Skoda and Volkswagen cars will be built on the MQB A0-IN platform. Further, they will use the new petrol engine but might continue with old 1.5 Litre TDI diesel engines.

There are speculations suggesting the Skoda and Volkswagen might only introduce petrol variants for smaller cars like Polo, the upcoming compact SUV from both the brands and their compact sedans. Although, for the larger cars, it will continue with the 2.0 Litre TDI diesel unit.
Currently, Skoda Rapid starts from Rs 8.47 Lakhs to Rs 13.92 Lakhs (ex-showroom). The competitors for this sedan include the Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Vento, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Honda City.
