Piaggio is planning to launch electric scooters in India. Earlier, at the Auto Expo, it had showcased the Vespa Elettrica, which might come to India. This scooter is a mixture of retro-style with the modern electric powertrain. We can expect the scooter to launch in India by 2020-21.
LML Vespa was a 2-stroke gear scooter and was much success in its time. Years after its demise, Piaggio revived the Vespa with gearless scooters. The resemblance was similar to the older ones. We can say that Vespa is one of the classiest looking scooters in India. The colour combination, the simple styling bit and its retro design are just enough for us to drool over it. However, its high pricing puts the scooter down. Vespa is one of the most expensive scooters in India. Now, Piaggio seems to be readying for an electric version of the Vespa. It has confirmed the news recently at an event. The Vespa Elettrica was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. Speculations say that this might be their first electric scooter in India.

Piaggio 2-wheelers (India-business head,) Ashish Yakhmi said, “We’re ready with the technology for two-wheelers and four-wheelers as well, but we’re waiting for regulations to introduce the vehicles in the country.” The company was now studying the market and infrastructure like charging facility which was needed for e-vehicles, he said.
The Piaggio Vespa Elettrica comes with an electric motor which is capable of delivering 2kW of power, which goes to maximum 4kW. Currently, it has the Primavera in its global lineup, which is a 50cc electric scooter. The Elettrica will be more powerful than the other one and would have better acceleration. The range of the scooter is around 100 kms, while the ‘X’ variant will have a range of 200 kms. In the X variant, there is a small petrol engine with the electric motor, which helps in doubling the range. Piaggio claims four hours for a full charge.
Features on the Elettrica will be a multimedia system with smartphone connectivity, which can be operated through a new colour TFT display. Other features could be LED headlamps, ABS, LED tail lights and more. For design, it looks similar to all the Vespas but gets a more retro style look. Might be because of its chrome silver colour scheme.

The scooter has not been unveiled globally too. We expect it to be unveiled in 2020 globally, following which it might come to India in late 2020 or 2021. Expect the scooter to be priced easily around Rs 1.5 Lakhs – 2 Lakhs. With the growing electric concept in India, we can expect India to adapt to its lifestyle in 2-3 years.
