SAIC will soon become the first-ever Chinese car manufacturer to produce and sell cars in India with the launch of the MG brand of cars. As per many reports that abound the web space, SAIC has already registered ‘MG Motor India’ as their Indian subsidiary. SAIC isn’t really all that new to India. It may be noted here that the manufacturer worked in close ties with General Motors before the latter announced its exit. The Chinese partner will now use its partner’s Halol plant in Gujarat to manufacture MG cars in India. But before it launches these cars in 2019, the manufacturer will showcase its upcoming models at the Auto Expo 2018. Here are all the details on the upcoming MG Cars at Auto Expo 2018.
Upcoming MG Cars at Auto Expo 2018
Other than producing and selling many MG cars in China, SAIC offers two models in MG’s origin country, UK. These models comprise of the MG 3 hatchback and MG GS small SUV. Both these models are very likely to go on sale in India. Other than these two, MG will also bring the XS SUV to India. We expect all the three models to be a part of the lineup of the upcoming MG Cars at Auto Expo 2018. Here are the details on the three cars.
MG Cars India – MG3
Launch Date | October 2019 |
Price | Rs 5.5 Lakh – Rs 9.5 Lakh |

The MG3 is basically a large hatchback that has just got a facelift. It is this facelift that will make it to India. The 2017 MG3, when launched in India, will go on to rival the likes of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. In UK, this car rivals the Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio. While the UK-spec MG3 offers a 106HP 1.5-litre petrol engine, the India-spec model will get a 1.2-litre Petrol and a 1.3-litre Diesel engine. Both these engines will come from the now Chevrolet Sail UVA hatchback that is not on sale anymore.
MG Cars India – MG XS
Launch Date | Early 2020 |
Price | Rs 8.5 Lakh – Rs 12.5 Lakh |

The MG XS will be seen rivalling cars like the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster in India. With the Mahindra XUV 300 and Nissan Kicks also headed our way, this segment is sure to see a lot of action. The MG XS looks modern, has a long list of features and is sure to appeal to many. Engine options for India aren’t known at the moment but safely expect the manufacturer to launch this model here with Petrol and Diesel engine options. The MG XS should help MG Cars India to establish a strong foothold in the market. Watch this space for news updates on the MG XS India launch date and price.
MG Cars India – MG GS
Launch Date | Late 2020 |
Price | Rs 14.5 Lakh – Rs 19.5 Lakh |

Indians and their love affair with SUVs is at an all time high. That is why the MG GS could turn out to be just the right model for MG Cars India to cash in on this trend. Based on its price and competitors in the UK, the GS will sit in the Hyundai Tucson territory. It will rival upcoming products like the Renault Kaptur, Honda HR-V, etc. While the UK-spec model gets only a petrol engine, it is highly likely to also offer a diesel unit if it makes it to India.
