While it is no hot hatch, that 1.5-litre diesel engine gives it enough power and grunt to transform it into a sleeper. Coupled with low weight, this car’s mileage is quite good too.
Hyundai Elite i20

However, there is never a doubt about the fact that Hyundai cars are some of the most feature-rich cars in their respective segments. The fact is that this car still looks quite good, has a good diesel engine and is the only car in its segment to offer a 6-speed manual gearbox while the rest stick with a 5-speed unit.

The DZire is based on the third-generation Swift hatchback. However, it has been developed alongside the hatchback, which means both cars are still quite different. Also, it is one of the few cars on this list of best diesel cars under 10 lakhs to come with an automatic gearbox with its diesel engine. Among the standard features of the car are dual-tone interior, dual airbags with ABS and EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, gear shift indicator, tilt-adjustable steering and front accessory socket. FOr a premium, you can have it with projector headlamps with LED DRLs, rear A/c vent and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Transmission | 5-speed manual |
The Tigor may sport the same Impact design language as the Tiago. However, it is a different beast altogether. Styled like a notchback (Tata calls it a Styleback), this car has an innovative four-bar boot opening mechanism that uses no boot space at all. It has projector headlamps, two drive modes, dual-path suspension at both ends and an 8-speaker audio system. Lastly, certain features of this car like climate control and infotainment unit can be controlled by your voice only.

On this list, it is the only hybrid diesel car, which helps it in delivering astounding mileage. In fact, it is the most fuel-efficient car in India. It comes packing a touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay support. Among the standard features of this car are dual front airbags with ABS and EBD and projector headlamps, rear A/c vents, electrically adjustable ORVMS, tilt-adjustable steering, keyless entry and pollen filter in A/c.

The Aspire is to Ford what the DZire is to Maruti Suzuki. It comes with the 1.5-litre diesel engine that also does duties on the EcoSport compact SUV. However, it has 10Nm more torque in this application. This car packs features such as SYNC Applink infotainment system, Ford MyKey, perimeter alarm, 6 airbags, power fold and adjustable ORVMs, a gear shift indicator and a boot lamp. The car has been battling slow sales. However, it is among the few cars on this list of best diesel cars under 10 lakhs that you will enjoy driving everyday.

Displacement | 1498cc |
Power | 108BHP |
Torque | 250Nm |
Transmission | 5-speed manual/7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic |
The Ameo is VW India‘s first made-in-India car. An entry in the compact sedan space, it has been priced at the premium end of the segment. However, there is a reason for it. This is the only sedan out here that offers a dual-clutch automatic gearbox and among the few diesel cars, not mentioned in this best diesel cars under 10 lakhs list, to do so. You can also have it with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It has a number of segment-first features to boast of such as the folding rear seats, anti-pinch one-touch up/down power windows (front and rear), cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and opening/closing of windows with remote. It is quite fuel-efficient too. Now, if you consider this car’s specs, features and its price alongside that of Maruti DZire, doesn’t it look like great value for money even with a slightly-higher price tag?

Also, it is one of the only two cars on this to offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality right from the factory. The Ignis is the third car on this list that retails from Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa outlets. Outside of what this car packs, like projector headlamps and dual front airbags with ABS and EBD, it can be personalised quite extensively to suit its owner’s taste.

The speedometer of the car features 5 preset mood lighting. Then there are projector headlamps and touchscreen infotainment system on offer on Vitara Brezza, for a premium of course.
