Almost a year after it made its public debut in India at the 2016 Auto Expo, the Ignis was finally launched here on January 13, 2017. It comes with petrol and diesel engine options that can be had with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT. So, it seems like all possible variants of the Ignis have already gone on sale. Or have they? Recently, just days after its launch, a heavily camouflaged test mule of the Ignis was spotted on Delhi roads. Could this a new variant? Maybe they’re working on Maruti Ignis RS with 1.0 L Boosterjet Petrol engine. Or maybe they’re testing it for foreign markets.

During the build up to its launch, many were speculating that MSIL will launch the Ignis with a 1.0 L turbo petrol engine. However, that has clearly not been the case. Maybe those reports were not entirely wrong. Maruti Suzuki already manufactures the Baleno with the 1.0 L Boosterjet petrol at its plant in Haryana. In fact, that variant of the Baleno will soon be launched in India under the Baleno RS moniker. Maybe MSIL is toying with the idea of introducing a new variant in the coming months. This RS variant will be perfect for those looking for extra performance from the Ignis. It could go on sale as the Ignis RS with a power output of around 110 BHP.

At the time of its launch, Maruti stressed on the fact that they are targeting a younger audience with the Ignis. A sportier RS variant could help enhance the Ignis’ appeal to the demographic Maruti is aiming for. However, it is equally likely that the test mule you see here is just gathering additional data for their R&D department. The Ignis is based on an all new platform that might be utilised for future Suzuki models. Or, there is a possibility that the Ignis seen in the video is the international-spec model undergoing regular tests. MSIL has already stated that they intend to export the made in India Ignis to South Asian and South East Asian markets.
