Toyota India has today announced that it will increase its production capacity from current capacity of 1,50,000 cars per year to 3,10,000 cars per year by 2013 with an investment of about Rs. 900 Crores in India. Toyota will not only increase the production capacity, but will also increase the localization or local sourcing of parts which will increase employment opportunities for skilled workers in Toyota and its ancillaries. This production increase has been planned and announced keeping in view the ever increasing demand for cars like Toyota Innova MPV, Toyota Fortuner SUV, Toyota Corolla Altis Sedan , Toyota Etios sedan and Toyota Etios Liva hatchback in India.
The production in the first plant will be enhanced from 90,000 units to 1,00,000 units and in the second plant from 1,20,000 units to 2,10,000 units. The first plant will manufacture Innova and Fortuner and the second plant will manufacture Etios, Etios Liva and Corolla Altis. Furthering the growth ofToyotainIndiaby locally manufacturing the parts of Etios and Etios Liva, Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts Pvt Ltd (TKAP), plans to install aluminum casting and machining lines, scheduled to begin operations in early 2014.
Commenting on the localization project in India, Mr. Vikram Kirloskar said
“The Etios project is a milestone phase in the growth ofToyotainIndia. We are now preparing to cater to increasing demand and are working on the expansion ofToyotainIndia. Etios and Etios Liva have been designed specifically for the Indian market. The localization project is vital to provide best quality product at a competitive price”.
Toyota will increase the production capacity in phased manner in July 2011, Mid 2012 and 2013. The production capacity in July 2011 will be boosted to 1,60,000 car units per year, by mid of 2012, it will further increase to 2,10,000 units with a major increase by 2013 adding another 1,00,000 units capacity to it making it a total of 3,10,000 in total at the end of 2013.
This is a bold increase of over 100% over existing capacity and reflects the commitment and future roadmap of Toyota in India. With a relatively recent entry into the small car segment in India, Toyota India yet has a lot of potential growth prospects in the coming years. With such increase in Capacity, Toyota can even plan to export some of its cars to other global auto markets in the years to come.
