Toyota Etios small car had received a very positive response in just a few months of its launch in India. It took Toyota Engineers over 5 years of hard work to develop the Etios Small car. In India Toyota sells Toyota Etios Sedan and recently launched Toyota Etios Liva hatchback in petrol variants. The diesel engine variants of Etios small car are also expected to be launched soon in India. In a recent development, Toyota Motor Corporation in a filing to the US Securities Exchange Commission mentioned:
In August 2010, Toyota decided to construct a vehicle plant in Sorocaba, Brazil. This plant is expected to produce the Etios small vehicle introduced in India with an annual production capacity of 70,000 units. The plant is expected to commence production in late 2012.
Which clearly indicated that Toyota is developing a separate plant in Brazil to make the Etios Liva small car there and repeat the same success it has achieved in India in Brazilian car market as well. The small car has been priced very aggressively in India and comes as a no-nonsense package with good quality and fuel efficiency. It does not offer too flashy features or gadgetry and is highly targeted at the value for money segment in a price-sensitive market like India and Brazil.
The Brazilian plant for Toyota Etios at Sorocaba will have an annual capacity of producing 70,000 units of Etios cars. The unit is expected to become operational by end of 2012. Toyota has so far expressed no plans to export Etios from India as the present local demand in India is high enough to use the total production capacity. Maybe in future, Toyota may consider Indian or Brazilian plants to make cars for the International markets as well.
