Volvo has launched the S90 sedan in India. This becomes the Swedish manufacturer’s third launch this year, first two being the S60 Cross Country and the XC90 T8 Hybrid. It replaces the aging Volvo S80 sedan in India. The Volvo S90 D4 trim costs Rs. 53.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi and Mumbai). Also, dealers have started accepting bookings for the sedan. The Volvo S90 India launch took place today i.e. November 4, 2016, in Mumbai. The E-Class on sale in India is already a generation old. Even the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 are reaching the ends of their respective life cycles. Launching the S90 now might give Volvo a slight advantage. However, for now, only the cheaper D4 trim has been launched. The more expensive Volvo S90 D5 will come to India in early 2017.

As we mentioned earlier, the S90 range starts at Rs 53.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It is available in only the D4 Inscription trim for now. Bookings for the S90 are already underway. Dealer level sources claim to have received around 150 bookings for the new Volvo sedan. Volvo S90 Deliveries in India will start in December 2016.
The S90 comes to India as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) attracting high import duties. For now, only the D4 diesel variant has gone on sale. The more powerful D5 diesel will come to us early next year. However, Volvo is evaluating the petrol versions for India as well. They could be launched in India at a later stage at a starting price of around 55 lakhs.

The Volvo S90 costs more than it rivals owing to the fact that it is imported to India as a CBU. Volvo has been toying with the idea of commencing local assembly of its products in India. However, they need a certain of sales volume to justify the investment required to setup and assembly line.

The 1969 cc four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine will be available in two states of tune – 190 hp – 400 Nm Front-wheel Drive or 235 hp – 480 Nm all wheel drive. Both will come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is the same engine that powers the Volvo XC90 SUV in India. Petrol engine options could arrive in India at a later stage.

Powering the S90 is the same 2.0 L diesel that does duty on the XC90. Volvo claims an overall fuel efficiency of 17 kpl for the SUV. Therefore, the sedan should deliver more mileage. We’re expecting an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 19-10 kpl for the Volvo S90 sedan.

Volvo S90 Exterior and Interior Design
Volvo’s latest design language dictates the styling of the new S90 sedan. It features a front end reminiscent of the new XC90 SUV that was launched in India in 2015. The signature Volvo front grille, full LED headlamps, and Thor’s Hammer LED DRLs are the highlights of the nose. The tail is perhaps the most distinctive part of the design. Highlights include a sculpted boot lid and C-shaped taillights. The latter could have been a little sleeker. Overall, the design of the Volvo S90 is understated, yet elegant.
The above statement is true for the interiors as well. There is nice usage of light and dark materials around the cabin. Complementing the general theme are tastefully done silver and wood inserts. Dominating the centre console is an 8-inch touchscreen with vertical AC vents on either side. The dials are all digital. In all probability, Volvo will provide a choice of customization options such as choice of leather upholstery, sound system, etc.

Volvo S90 India Engine and Transmission
Volvo S90 in India comes with a 2.0 L Diesel engine. It is available in two states of tune. Volvo S90 D4 will feature a 190 hp version while the D5 trim will get a 235 hp version. For now, only the 190 hp D4 version is on sale in India. Peak torque output will be 400 Nm and 480 Nm respectively. In both cases, the engine comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Volvo recently brought the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid to India. The manufacturer might decide to bring the S90 T8 to India at a later stage. For now, the S90 will be sold with a diesel engine option only.
