We heard an official announcement from Yamaha India head, Pankaj Dubey in December 2010 about launch of Yamaha Gearless Scooters in India to compete with Honda Activa and TVS Wego kind of scooters. The announcement gave an impression that the launch will commence in the year 2011, probably the first half of 2011. But those expectations have been dismissed at present. In the recent turn of events, Yamaha India CEO and MDH Hiroyuki Suzuki has quoted:
The scooter market in India is huge and we want to have a strong presence. Now we are preparing to launch a scooter here within 2012. It will be focused more on personal commuting, with stylish and smart design like Yamaha’s motorcycles that are sold here. In Indonesia, Yamaha has a market share of around 46 per cent(in scooters), which is very close to that of Honda. I want to replicate that here in India as well.
So if you have been waiting for a launch of Yamaha scooters in India, looks like the wait is another on year long. One thing is certain that Yamaha is serious on this roadmap and the scooter is under development for Indian condition. Also looking at the Yamaha India generic design language, the scooter is expected to be designed well with a strong visual appeal along with the specifications. Details will get unwrapped slowly as we near the launch which is schedules for 2012.
