A few car owners have attempted to retrofit the electrical system in their old cars to convert them into EVs
In this post, we take a look at a rather simple but effective conversion of a Hyundai Santro into an electric vehicle. In the last few years, we have come across tons of cases where car shops have been able to transform an ICE car into an EV. Also, this is a common practice among two-wheeler owners. Perhaps that is why this post showcases the old Santro becoming the guinea pig. Let us glance at the details of this case here.
Hyundai Santro Converted into EV
The specifics of this case stem from Making With Mihir on YouTube. He explains all the details of the construction of this unique Santro. Firstly, he took out the top half of the engine. He kept the lower half so that he didn’t have to use two additional electric motors for the power steering and AC compressor. Thereafter, he installed the electric motor on the top half of the existing engine along with the controller. In this manner, he was able to operate the car, AC and power steering with a single electric motor itself.
The Lithium Ferrous Phosphate battery pack was positioned in the boot compartment. From there, it supplies power to the electric motor. Then they had to resolve the issue of power brakes. In regular cars, there is a brake booster behind the steering wheel which is operated via the engine. Since this Santro is without an engine, the host had to install an electric vacuum pump. Finally, they had to ensure that the 12-volt car battery gets enough power to enable in-car functions like power windows, headlights, central locking, etc. Overall, this took Rs 2.55 lakh investment and 3 days. The car has a range of 80 km on a single charge and a top speed of 60 km/h.
My View
I must admit it is quite impressive to see a standard Hyundai Santro getting converted into an electric car with this simple process. The host made sure that he restored this car, which is so special to him, as it is his grandfather’s vehicle. With the electric components, the car got a fresh lease of life. I shall keep an eye out for more such cases in the times to come.
