Even though the Chinese media is largely controlled, the foreign media is showcasing a rather scary side of Chinese cars
In a concerning report, Russian car owners are slamming Chinese cars for poor quality. It is common knowledge that Chinese goods are often among the cheapest in the world due to their robust manufacturing capabilities and cheap labour. However, an unfortunate consequence of that is the compromise with the quality. Regardless of which industry we consider, their products are often inferior to other foreign players in that industry. That is seemingly becoming clear even in the automobile world where China is the world leader. It is the largest automobile market on the planet. In recent years, Chinese carmakers have started expanding in many international markets.
Russians Say Chinese Cars Are Garbage
This video comes from China Observer on YouTube. The report captures a detailed description of the entire issue. Due to the widespread control of the Chinese government on the media, there aren’t all that many instances of issues people can report with local cars in China. However, since China exports a whole range of vehicles to many international markets, we get to know the reality. In this case, the Russian car owners, engineers, government and related authorities have conducted surveys and shared their experience of Chinese cars.
Shockingly, most of these vehicles don’t last half of what European, Japanese or Korean carmakers do. The report states that the average lifespan of German cars is 11 years, while that of Chinese car companies is less than 5 years. Also, the studies even showed that there is heavy rusting on Chinese cars after a couple of years, while the other cars don’t show rusting for almost a decade. Thereafter, the mechanical issues pertaining to transmission and suspension are much worse and more frequent on Chinese cars than any other reputed foreign carmaker.
All these point to the fact, that the overall quality of Chinese cars is extremely poor. On top of that, there is often the issue of aftersales services. Firstly, the number of service centres is much less. Secondly, most of these cars use specific tools for repair which are only available at authorized service stations. Hence, that poses a huge challenge for car owners. Finally, the cars are not designed keeping the Russian winters in mind. Russians are now looking for strict action to restrict Chinese cars in Russia and ensure high standards for vehicles.
My View
Now, Chinese carmakers have been incredibly popular in the last few years. This is especially true since the mass production of electric cars across the globe. The Chinese cars seem mega enticing with their exceptionally low price points and latest tech features. However, it is understandable that all this results in a compromise with quality and durability. They often lack severely when compared to European, Japanese and Korean auto giants. Let us see how they improve going forward and how the other nations deal with this situation.
