Diesel cars often struggle in harsh winters even though modern cars are devoid of such issues for the most part
In this post, we take a look at the details of a rather extreme experiment with a Tata Altroz diesel in the chilling winters of Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. Lahaul and Spiti is a region in the Himalayas known for being one of the coldest inhabited places in the country. The temperatures go below -30 degrees Celsius during the winter months. In fact, the host of this video showcases his phone showing -31 degrees. That is as extreme as it gets. For now, let us see how well the diesel premium hatchback is able to deal with this situation.
Tata Altroz Diesel in -31 Degrees Celsius
This post stems from Akbar Vlogs on YouTube. The YouTuber is on a solo trip to Spiti in peak winters. At the beginning of this video, he demonstrates the cold start scenario. He tried to start the car early in the morning before sunrise when the temperature was around -31 degrees Celsius. As expected, the vehicle didn’t start initially. He then tried a few other techniques. In fact, he came prepared for this circumstance and had installed some equipment to aid the engine in cold temperatures. This includes things like anti-freezing agents and more. However, still, he had to make a few attempts before the car eventually started.
Thereafter, he showcased his entire journey within the area. Obviously, the entire region was covered in thick snow. To ensure some traction, he had wrapped snow chains around the tyres of his car. That is a common practice in these regions when the roads are inundated with heavy snow. With that, he was able to travel relatively easily without too many issues. Still, this has to be among the most perilous tracks during this time of the year, especially if you are not an expert.
My View
Now while we come across many winter expeditions in Spiti during the winter season, I would advise our readers to never attempt anything like this alone. Also, if you don’t have an expert driver, it is better to not get involved in such drives. These might look fun and cool on the internet, but the real-life situation is quite different. Hence, you should not take these things for granted. These regions have extreme climatic conditions which could easily turn fatal when you are not used to it.
