The German car marque has been working intensely towards an electric future for a while now
VW has teased its new upcoming entry-level EV for Europe. Note that this marks the German auto giant’s next step towards mass electrification. We know that affordability is one of the biggest issues with mass EV adoption across the globe. Hence, such cars will address that pain point and cater to the masses. This is in line with Volkswagen’s three-stage plan to launch 9 new models by 2027. This also includes the production version of the ID.2all which will have a price tag of less than โฌ25,000 (Rs 22.68 lakh). For now, let us take a look at the details of this new EV.
VW Teases New Entry-Level EV
As per the official announcement, VW will launch the entry-level with a planned retail price of under โฌ20,000 (Rs 18.14 lakh). While this EV will be demonstrated as a show car in March 2025, the world premiere of the production model is slated for 2027. Thomas Schรคfer, VW CEO, remarked about the car, “An affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe. This will be the Champions League of automobile manufacturing.” Clearly, it will first launch in Europe, followed by the other international markets.
It will use the evolved MEB platform which will also underpin the upcoming ID.2all. The latter will reach dealerships in 2026 as VW’s first all-electric small car. Apart from that, VW has teased the front fascia of the new entry-level EV. Overall, it carries that upright stance which we have seen on modern raised hatchbacks / crossovers. At the front, it gets the typical LED lighting with 3D graphics along with an illuminated VW logo at the centre. Additionally, we see LED DRLs positioned vertically on the extreme edges of the bumper. Look closely and you will also see the back of a free-standing infotainment screen inside the cabin. All in all, the EV will be compact.
India Launch Prospects
Now, VW is serious about expanding its footprint in our market as well. Its MQB A0 IN platform was created to make cars to suit the needs of Indian buyers. It would ideally like to carry that trend into the electric era as well. However, we know that even the Europe launch of this car will take place in 2027. Hence, there is a lot of time until that to figure out if it wants to launch it in India. I reckon we could see it on our roads by that time as the EVs will have become even more prominent.
