Tata Safari is an iconic moniker in the Indian automobile history and it is rare to see all the generations together
In this post, we are taking a look at the details of all generations of Tata Safari together. Safari was first launched in India back in 1998. Today, we find it in its 4th-generation avatar. That is a testament to the consistent growth and demand for the SUV in our market. The Safari nameplate has a rich legacy and history. It was among the first Indian-made aspirational SUVs for people of our country a couple of decades ago. Big, tall, bulky and powerful, there was a unique aura around owning and driving it on the road. That was its biggest charm which continues till today. For this post, let us take a look at the details of all these avatars of the Tata Safari.
All Generations of Tata Safari
Gen 1 Tata Safari
This video stems from Fuel Injected on YouTube. The host has all the models of the Safari right from 1998. In fact, he explains the specific details about each model before going on to drive them. For instance, the first-gen model went into production in 1998. It had a 2.0-litre Peugeot XD88 turbo diesel engine which generated a cool 87 PS of peak power. This engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission which powered the rear wheels. However, there was the option of going for the AWD iteration as well. You would be surprised to know that the Indian auto giant even exported it to Europe. There, it embodied a few changes for the specific markets like a redesigned bumper and headlight washer. Considering it was launched in 1998, it contained many unique features like rear AC vents, a soft-touch dashboard and electrically adjustable ORVMs.
Thereafter, it received a facelift model which had tons of enhancements and alterations in terms of design, features and powertrain. Hence, to call it a mere facelift is a bit of an understatement. On the outside, it had new headlamps, a new bumper, a new grille, a new braking system, and a brand-new 3.0-litre Dicor engine which was developed in just 6 months to rival the Mahindra Scorpio. This mill was good for 114 hp and 300 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. This is a special edition model which was sent to a rally for SAARC members. Tata Motors created 30 special units for this rally. It had tons of additional features over the stock.
Gen 2 Tata Safari
Then we had the Gen 2 Tata Safari which was responsible for an immense craze for the SUV among regular car buyers. Again, the aesthetics were enhanced significantly along with the in-cabin amenities. In fact, sitting in its cabin oozes a feeling of a premium space. Also, it featured a new engine which was much smoother and powerful. This was the 2.2-litre Dicor mill which belted out a respectable 140 hp and 320 Nm of peak power and torque. Furthermore, it even contained a different chassis than the outgoing model.
Gen 3 Tata Safari
Then came arguably the most desirable avatar of the Tata Safari for most potential car buyers, the Safari Storme. It was launched in our market in 2012. In fact, you will find one of these plying on the roads even today. The Safari Storme upped the ante with all the latest bells and whistles for the time in addition to a fresh and butch exterior styling and improved mechanical components. With this, the spare wheel was shifted from the boot lid to under the boot. Initially, it had the Varicor 320 engine which produced a decent 140 hp and 320 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. However, at a later stage, it got the Varicor 400 engine which generated a massive 156 hp and 400 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. Note that this model was modified further for the Indian Army. You must’ve seen it in the convoy of our armed forces over the years. In total, over 3,100 such units were created and supplied to our Army.
Gen 4 Tata Safari
Finally, we arrive at the current-gen Tata Safari which evidently looks futuristic compared to the other models. This latest version of the Safari bears striking looks with modern front fascia and an immensely luxurious interior. In fact, it has a selling price of over Rs 30 lakh, on-road for the top model. That is a testament to how far the Indian carmaker has come with this product. It carries a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine which outputs 170 PS and 350 Nm of peak power and torque. There are manual and automatic transmission options to take care of the needs of all sorts of buyers. These are all generations of Tata Safari.
