The largest EV maker on the planet has been linked to India for a couple of years now but the plans have not come to fruition just yet
Tesla has been allegedly searching for a showroom space in New Delhi after dropping the plans to enter India a few months ago. Remember, Tesla has been interested in the burgeoning Indian market for the longest time. In fact, he even met PM Modi during the latter’s visit to the U.S. earlier this year. It was looking like Elon Musk was ready to invest the mandatory $500 million in India in exchange for lower import duties as a part of India’s new EV policy. But it never happened. Until now!
Tesla Looking for Showroom in New Delhi
As per a Reuters report, their sources informed that Tesla is in the early stages of discussion with DLF for a showroom space in New Delhi. The report mentions that it is looking for a 3,000-5,000 square feet (280-465 square metre) area in New Delhi to create a consumer experience centre. Moreover, Tesla is also in search of an area almost triple that for its delivery and service operations. At the moment, the options Tesla is exploring include DLF’s Avenue Mall in south Delhi, Cyber Hub and retail complex in Gurugram. As a matter of fact, Elon Musk is also considering entering India for its Starlink after winning a lobbying battle against Mukesh Ambani.
Note that India’s new EV policy is aimed at attracting foreign investments by offering the carmakers lower import duties. In general, there are tariffs worth over 100% on imports, but with investment, this comes significantly down to 15%. Hence, there is a great upside for the companies while it will create jobs for the Indians. In essence, it will be a win-win situation for everyone. Now, it remains to be seen whether Tesla goes through with the plan to officially enter India this time around.
My View
Tesla is the biggest EV maker in the world. It has been largely responsible for the EV revolution globally in the past decade. Today, we have reached a place where every car company has some electric vehicle model on sale. Going forward, carmakers have announced concrete plans to achieve carbon neutrality. I am just glad to be a part of this electric revolution.
