Skoda has finally taken the wraps off of its latest compact SUV, first from Skoda globally, the Kylaq, and the launch is slated for January 2025
The new Skoda Kylaq has been revealed as I compare it to the mega-popular Maruti Brezza in terms of specs, features, design and more. Note that the compact SUV segment is the most crowded in our market. It features products from almost every major mass-market car company. That makes things exciting for the potential buyers. However, for OEMs, they need to put their best foot forward because the margin for error is very little. Being the last entrant into this rapidly burgeoning category, Skoda is coming all guns blazing. It understands the customer mindset and wants to capitalize on that knowledge. On the other hand, the Maruti Brezza is one of the segment leaders. Let us compare the two thoroughly.
New Skoda Kylaq vs Maruti Brezza – Design
Both these SUVs are quite distinct despite being in the same segment. The new Kylaq can be thought of as a mini Kushaq. It takes inspiration from the Kushaq which is why we get to see modern elements like slim LED DRLs on the end of the contoured bonnet, a massive grille with 3D ribs effect, the main LED headlamps on the bumper below with integrated LED fog lamp with cornering function. Apart from that, the lower half contains an aluminium optics skid plate to lend it that imposing road presence. The side profile is constructed with elegant 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, creaseless side body panels, robust door claddings and black roof rails. Finally, the tail end highlights a 3D diffusion insert on the lower rear bumper, shark fin antenna, LED taillamp cluster with a thin gloss frame connecting the two with Skoda lettering and more.
On the contrary, the Maruti Brezza features the latest design language from the Indo-Japanese auto giant. At the front, we get to witness a butch stance with that solid grille section finished in chrome and flanked by distinct LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The Suzuki logo is surrounded by chrome elements. Down below, the massive bumper contains black materials and a rugged skid plate section. Note that the fog lamps are placed on the extreme edges of the bumper. Moving down the sides highlight the black side pillars, chunky wheel arches, sturdy side body skirtings and elegant alloy wheels. At the rear, it boasts a shark fin antenna, a roof-mounted spoiler, sharp LED taillamps, a sporty bumper and a solid skid plate. The stance of the SUV is appealing.
New Skoda Kylaq vs Maruti Brezza – Specs
In terms of specifications, both these SUVs are closely stacked. Unlike some other SUVs in this space, the Skoda Kylaq will be available with a single engine. This is the potent 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI turbo petrol mill which churns out a familiar 115 PS and 178 Nm of peak power and torque. This is the same engine which powers the Kushaq and Slavia in lower trims. Complementing this engine is the option of choosing between either a 6-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission. The Czech car marque says that the compact SUV can propel from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10.5 seconds. It will have a top speed of 188 km/h. I am certain that people would want it as a driver’s car.
On the other hand, the Maruti Brezza is available with a sole 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with a CNG option. This produces a decent 103 PS and 138 Nm of peak power and torque. Performing the transmission duties is either a 5-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. In addition to that, this engine makes 89 PS and 121.5 Nm of maximum power and torque with the CNG fuel. This variant is available with a sole 5-speed manual gearbox. One can expect a mileage of 17.38 km/l with the manual, 19.8 km/l with the automatic and 25.51 km/kg with the CNG. Therefore, the needs of all kinds of buyers can be met. Neither of these offers a diesel engine.

Dimensions Comparison
In terms of dimensions, since both these are compact SUVs, they measure just under 4 m in length. That is critical to avail of the tax benefits associated with this size. One must note that while the differences in the overall dimensions are minute, arguably the most critical of the lot has to be the wheelbase. The Kylaq has an edge in this regard.
Dimensions (in mm) | Skoda Kylaq | Maruti Brezza |
Length | 3,995 | 3,995 |
Width | 1,783 | 1,790 |
Height | 1,619 | 1,685 |
Wheelbase | 2,566 | 2,500 |
Price Comparison
Note that the price of the base model of the new Skoda Kylaq has only been announced at this moment. It starts at an attractive Rs 7.89 lakh, ex-showroom. We will get to know the details of the prices of the entire trim range in January 2025 at the launch. On the other hand, the Maruti Brezza starts at Rs 8.34 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 14.14 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, the Kylaq certainly looks more compelling, at least in the lower trim.
Price (ex-sh.) | Skoda Kylaq | Maruti Brezza |
Base Model | Rs 7.89 lakh | Rs 8.34 lakh |
Top Model | TBA | Rs 14.14 lakh |
My View
Both these compact SUVs are enticing propositions. People can opt for the one which makes the most sense for them. However, to make an informed decision, we have to wait until the details of the prices of the entire range of the Skoda Kylaq are announced. In any case, other amenities are comparable. For instance, both these are available with petrol engines (albeit Brezza even offers a CNG option), the features list is extensive and the exterior designs are attractive in their own rights. Therefore, prices will determine the final decision.
