The Indian auto giant has been selling cars in our country since 1945. At the time, it was called Mahindra and Mohammed
Mahindra has recorded its best ever sales on a monthly basis after being in existence in the passenger vehicle segment for 79 years. That is quite an achievement. The Indian automaker has been selling the new-age popular and rugged SUVs in our market for close to 2 decades now. In fact, its products like the Scorpio, Bolero and Thar have been the workhorses and segment leaders in their respective divisions for the longest time. In the modern era, Mahindra has launched more premium versions of the same. However, it all started back in 1945 as Mahindra and Mohammed (M&M). After the partition, Ghulam Mohammed moved to Pakistan. Hence, the M&M represented the brothers Kailash Chandra Mahindra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra from thereon. The current Chairman, Anand Mahindra, is the grandson of Kailash Chandra Mahindra.
Mahindra Records Best Ever Sales
Remember Mahindra entered the elite list of carmakers with over 50,000 monthly sales only in September 2024 for the first time ever. While that was an iconic moment in its rich history, it has been able to outdo itself in October with a whopping 54,504 units sold. This marks a cool 25% growth on a year-on-year basis with 43,78 units sold in October 2023. Another key milestone with this number is that Mahindra became the highest SUV-selling car company in one month ever. That is a testament to just how popular its current breed of SUVs is. These include the likes of the Bolero, Bolero Neo, Thar, Thar Roxx, Scorpio Classic, Scorpio N, XUV3XO, XUV400 (Electric) and XUV700.
Note that these are just domestic sales. In recent years, it has become one of the biggest emerging players in a few international markets including South Africa and Australia. Its latest SUVs offer great worth for the money in terms of modern amenities, powerful engines and great off-roading capabilities. Apart from that, the Thar Roxx bagged a jaw-dropping 1.76 lakh bookings within the first hour. Going forward, we will experience almost half-a-dozen electric SUVs including an electric Thar. Clearly, exciting times lie ahead for the Indian car marque on the global stage.
My View
I must admit I am extremely proud of what Mahindra has been able to achieve in the last few years. The fact that an Indian carmaker is making world-class products is mighty impressive. We must credit the vision of Anand Mahindra and the skills of its engineers which have created compelling SUVs. What is also important is to realize that Mahindra offers SUVs for all kinds of needs. This consists of urban SUVs, hardcore off-roading SUVs, luxury SUVs, compact SUVs, utilitarian SUVs, and electric SUVs. I am curious to watch Mahindra’s journey in times to come.
