Off-roading enthusiasts often take their hardcore machines to the aftermarket car modification houses to perform extreme customizations
This has to be India’s only Maruti Jimny with rear axle steering. Jimny has been an iconic name in the off-roading community across the globe for decades. It is a lightweight off-roader which is nimble and rugged. However, it is the first time in its existence that there is a 5-door version. Until now, the Jimny was available only in a 3-door avatar. But that lacked practicality and boot space. To remedy that and cater to the price-conscious Indian buyers, the Jimny was launched in India in the 5-door guise last year. For now, let us see what the latest modification of the Jimny embodies.
Maruti Jimny with Rear Axle Steering
The post stems from thepiyushpunjabi on Instagram. The visuals capture the unique Jimny in all its glory. In fact, the owner is showing off the skills and capabilities of this Jimny. Notably, the lightweight off-roader has a cut-out bumper at the front, while the rear bumper has been removed completely. This is done in order to accommodate monster tyres. To be honest, these look like the tyres of a tractor. To fit them in the wheel arches, massive modifications have been performed. Additionally, even the other mechanical components must’ve been transformed to install these tyres.
However, the main attraction is the rear axle steering. The owner is seen driving the off-roader enthusiastically in a relatively isolated location. There, he performs minor stunts to show off what his vehicle can do. During this time, we see the rear tyres of the Jimny turn. The owner even parks the Maruti Jimny and shows how the rear tyres are able to turn independently. In tight surroundings, all-wheel steering helps manoeuvre the car well. On off-roading trails, this ensures that the vehicle can even move sideways ever so slightly. Hence, the advantages of such a setup are manifold.
My View
I appreciate the lengths to which the owners and car mechanics go to to make a unique product. However, I can’t help but think about the long-term effects these mods will have on a vehicle. Even though Jimny is a hardcore off-roader, it is not meant to be modified so heavily. Also, aftermarket car components can’t offer the same amount of reliability as stock parts. As a result, after a while, you might start witnessing issues. Finally, these sorts of car modifications are illegal in India. Therefore, you can get into trouble with the traffic police. Hence, you must keep all these factors in mind before going for some extreme alterations to your car.
