Kia is having a blast in the Indian automobile market as it recently launched two ultra-premium products, new Carnival and EV9 electric SUV
The Kia Carens EV has been confirmed by the Korean auto giant and we might see the launch as soon as next year. Kia has achieved incredible success in our market. It has become the fastest automaker to reach 1 million (10 lakh) domestic sales in in just 59 months. That is a testament to the popularity of its mass-market products. These include the Sonet, Seltos and Carens. These are the prime volume churners for Kia. Just a few days ago, Kia also launched its flagship products in ICE and electric segments. These are the new Carnival and the EV9, respectively. Now, reports are surfacing about Kia wanting to launch the electric iteration of the Carens.
Kia Carens EV Launch Confirmed
Kia will launch the electric version of the Carens most likely by next year. Carens currently sells as a 7-seat SUV in our market. It is positioned in the same price bracket as the Seltos mid-size SUV. Going forward, most carmakers are planning to electrify their lineups. This includes either by converting the existing models into EVs or creating new vehicles from scratch. Note that the flagship EV9 is based on the E-GMP architecture from Hyundai. However, the Carens EV could use the same platform as the ICE model with a few modifications. The exact details are still under wraps.
Having said that, we can expect it to have a driving range of around 500 km on a single charge. Apart from that, we know that Kia is one carmaker which loves to equip its vehicles with the latest tech, connectivity, convenience, comfort and safety amenities. In fact, in its global EV lineup, it focuses on sustainability with eco-friendly materials to design the cabin. Therefore, we can expect the EV to carry the new-age amenities to pamper the customers.
My View
The EV industry is on the rise in India. In fact, in major economies like the U.S., China and Europe, we are already beginning to see EV sales plateauing. However, as the charging infrastructure around EVs develops more and the battery costs come down, we shall experience more models on sale and people will be more willing to take the plunge. Until then, we can expect a steady growth in the EV sales. I will bring more details regarding the Kia Carens EV as the launch nears.
