The 2014 facelifted edition of the VW Polo was announced back at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 and the same has gone up for sale in Europe as well. The car is due for a launch soon in India as well and it has just been caught testing in Pune near the company’s facility with a 1.5 litre diesel motor. The Polo GT TDI which went on sale in 2013 was offered with a 1.6 litre diesel motor borrowed from the Vento, however the 2014 Volkswagen Polo GT TDI will get a slightly toned down version of the same which will be a 4-cylinder 1.5 litre unit.
It will also replace the current 1.2 litre diesel motor of the Polo. However, to differentiate the regular Polo diesel from the GT TDI, VW will offer the engine in two different states of tune. It will be churning out 85-90 BHP on the regular variants while the GT TDI variants will be churning out 104 BHP of maximum power. It will be mated to 6 Speed DSG gearbox for the GT TDI version while the regular one will get the current 5-speed transmission.
The lower state of tune will attract higher fuel efficiency while the higher state of tune will attract performance enthusiasts. Driveability will be one of the key areas of expertise of the diesel motor. The fact that it displaces 1.5 litres will help it qualify as a small engine and help VW price the car attractively courtesy of the lower tax duties which it will attract. The facelifted VW Polo comes with a tweaked headlamp cluster, a revised bumper and new enclosures for the fog lights.
The rear bumper gets tweaked slightly and features a bigger registration plate and integrated reflectors towards the end of the bumper. The facelifted Polo is expected to go on sale in the far end of the second quarter of 2014. The introduction of the new Polo will help the company keep pace with the competition and addition of the new diesel mill will help it cater to a larger market as many skipped it because the engine seemed underpowered. With the 1.5 litre coming in different states of tune, there is something for everyone on offer.
