The electric car segment is slated to grow rapidly in India as we prepare for some exciting mass market launches in the coming months.
There are some attractive upcoming electric cars in India which would be priced at under Rs 20 lakh. While it is still a lot of money, this is an affordable category when considering EVs. We know that electric cars are inherently significantly more expensive than their ICE counterparts. Their attraction is the fact that they can compensate for the high initial costs by low running costs over multiple years of ownership. Apart from that, the government is offering subsidies and the charging infrastructure is being developed rapidly. Hence, mass adoption is being pushed strongly. For now, let us take a look at the details of the upcoming electric cars under Rs 20 lakh in India.

Tata CURVV EV
Let us commence this list with the Tata CURVV EV which will debut on July 19. Note that Tata Motors is the biggest EV maker in the country. Until now, it has converted its top-selling ICE cars into EVs. This ensures low costs as almost the entire vehicle is retained in its regular form. However, the CURVV is an entirely new vehicle which is designed keeping in mind that it will be offered in petrol, diesel and electric avatar. In fact, it uses the Gen 2 Acti.ev platform. In terms of design, it will bear a coupe silhouette with a striking front end comprising of a connected LED strip at the front along with a sporty bumper with headlamps on either side.
In terms of features, it will offer Level 2 ADAS, a large instrument cluster, a colossal touchscreen infotainment display, 360-degree surround view monitor, wireless smartphone charging, connected car tech, two-spoke steering wheel, touch-sensitive HVAC controls, and much more. The EV will offer a range of around 500 km on a single charge. It could get a single-motor FWD or a dual-motor AWD configuration to cater to all kinds of customers. We can expect a price tag of around Rs 20 lakh.

Hyundai Creta EV
The next EV on this list of the upcoming electric cars in India is the Hyundai Creta EV. It will be the electric avatar of the mighty successful Hyundai Creta. The mid-size SUV promises to take this market segment by storm. The Korean auto giant wishes to leverage the popularity of the Creta moniker in the Indian market. The test mule has been spotted testing on the public roads on many occasions in recent times. It will most likely bear a similar design language as the regular model. But there will be enough distinctions to set the two apart. I am more curious to see what Hyundai offers on the inside. The interior might well be inspired by the Ioniq 5 to some extent.
Talking about the powertrain options, while nothing is official yet, the Creta EV could have a 45 kWh battery pack. It could offer a decent range of around 450 km. It will be interesting to see if it will share the electric motor or battery pack with the latest Kona Electric available in the international market. In that case, the power and torque outputs will be 138 hp and 255 Nm, respectively. We shall have to wait a bit more for the official announcement about the launch and other details.

MG Cloud EV
Next up, we have the MG Cloud EV on this list as well. It will be a direct rival to the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV and Tata CURVV EV. Hence, the electric crossover will have a length of around 4.3 m and a wheelbase of 2.7 m. While there are not a lot of details about the specifications, it might carry a 38 kWh battery pack. Note that it was spotted testing on public roads some time ago. However, since it was wearing a thick camouflage, we weren’t able to deduce all that much. The top amenities inside the cabin include a Dual-Screen Setup for the Driver’s Instrument Cluster and Infotainment, Connected Car Tech, a Panoramic Sunroof, Automatic Climate Control, Powered Seats, a 360-degree Camera, and more.

Maruti Suzuki eVX
The next vehicle on this list of upcoming electric cars in India is the Maruti Suzuki eVX. This will be the first electric car from the Japanese carmaker. In fact, it has showcased the concept version at major automotive events last year. Hence, we know that it will bear a striking appearance with a modern design language and a minimalist interior. It will be based on a dedicated platform which will even spawn many models going forward. As a matter of fact, the concept iteration offers a coupe silhouette.
In terms of specifications, there are a few unofficial reports online. We might see a 60 kWh battery pack with a range of around 550 km on a single charge. Moreover, the buyers will most likely be able to choose between either a 2WD or an AWD configuration. The power figures are estimated to be in the vicinity of 138 hp and 170 hp, depending on the variant. Finally, the dimensions will be around 4.3 m (length), 1.8 m (width) and 1.6 m (height). It will rival the aforementioned EVs in our market and the expected price will start at around Rs 20 lakh.

Renault Kwid EV
Finally, there will also be an extremely affordable EV in our market soon in the form of the Renault Kwid EV. Note that the ICE version of the Kwid is already among the most budget-friendly cars in the country. That will be the core of the new EV too. Renault said that they will launch the Kwid EV in India by 2024 or 2025. Initially, the localization will be 40-50% but with local batteries and cells, the aim is to reduce the costs even further. Note that the French carmaker offers the electric Kwid in Europe and China already.
Hence, we can expect a 26.8 kWh battery pack which could offer either 46 PS or 65 PS depending on which variant makes it to our shores. The WLTP range is a decent 295 km on a single charge and the price could be around Rs 10 lakh. That will be the major draw for a whole bunch of new buyers. Let us keep an eye out for all these launches and how these shape the electric future.
