The sales growth displayed by Tata Motors in the past few years has been second to none. In fact, some of its vehicles have been segment-toppers for many months now. Not just that, the first-mover advantage it enjoyed by launching affordable electric cars helped it become one of the more established names in the EV market. However, it’s not uncommon to come across social media posts in which the owners have reported their dissatisfaction with their vehicles. A recent episode involving a Tata Nexon EV is the latest to join the fray.
Loose Screw Causes Tata Nexon EV to Breakdown
As per a video from Dr Swathi Venkatraman on Instagram, her Tata Nexon EV broke down in the middle of a forest while on a family outing. As per her, the gear selector of her car became unresponsive. This made it impossible for her to drive the car forward or backward. This malfunction took place while the car was driving through a forest. Luckily for the owner, there was another car traveling with her. Also, it’s noteworthy that the road-side assistance was very responsive and quickly sent a recovery vehicle to transport the electric car to a service centre.
At the authorized service centre, the technicians quickly diagnosed the problem to be a loose screw in the moonshifter of the Nexon. Reportedly, the service centre suggested the issue could have been caused by general wear-and-tear or a manufacturer defective. The owner feels the former is unlikely as her car is quite new. The service centre fixed the issue within a day and the owner is highly satisfied with their responsiveness. But she’s still unhappy about such an issue occurring in her new car. Interestingly, the video’s comment section has many social media users taking a dig at the reliability of Tata vehicles. In fact, some of these comments come from existing Nexon EV owners who have faced similar issues.
Some of the comments include: โTypical Tata. Get used to this,โ and โTata logic: safety would be 100% if the car wonโt move.โ An owner of another Nexon EV writes, โWe should make a group of people who suffer from the gear problem. Itโs been 3 months since we bought the Nexon, and I am suffering from the same issue.โ
Our View
I feel that such an incident can majorly impact the ownership experience. No one would ever expect his or her new car to break down, especially in remote areas. But it’s pretty heartening to see the promptness and efficiency of the service center. Despite the breakdown being a major disappointment, the quick resolution by the service team is a silver lining. We also hope Tata Motors to take account of such cases and ensure such niggles are ironed out at the earliest. Even though the issue of a loose screw is quite minor, being stuck in the middle of nowhere can be a risky proposition for anyone.
