When Hero MotoCorp showcased its refreshed lineup last year back in October, it also showcased the Hero Splendor iSmart which would be a premium offering in the Splendor lineup and will sit above the conventional Splendor. What sets the Splendor iSmart apart from the regular lineup of the Splendor is the fact that this has start/stop system, which is a first in this segment. Hero is hoping that the increased economy of the bike will attract more customers in the already cut-throat 100cc commuter bike segment, where the competition from the likes of Honda, Mahindra and Bajaj is on the rise.

What’s New?
The bike’s unique feature is i3S (intelligent Start-Stop System), which Hero claims will increase the fuel-efficiency of the already frugal bike even more. Just like any other start-stop system, a technology that till now has been limited to cars in India, switches off the ignition when it senses that the engine has been idling for about 30 seconds. When you switch on the system and come to a halt after putting the bike in neutral, the engine shuts off after 5 seconds. Whenever you are ready to move again, just press the clutch and the engine will come back to life again.

In terms of styling, the Hero Splendor iSmart borrows most of its cues from the Super Splendor with added bits like a three-tone paint option and aluminium finished foot-pegs. The instrument cluster is new, with the addition of a side-stand-down indicator. Addition to the switchgear includes a new on-off switch for the start-stop system, which replaces the engine kill switch. Though it does not features like a front-disc brake even as an option, and rivals like the Bajaj Discover 100M do, it’s superb mileage ought to swing customers in its favour.

The bike has the good-old 97.2 cc single cylinder engine as its heart that has been powering the Splendor ever since its launch. It is good enough for a maxium power of 7.69 BHP @ 7,500 rpm and a peak torque figure of 8.04 NM @ 8,500 rpm. It gets mated to a 4 speed manual transmission and the bike will deliver a fuel efficiency figure north of 70 kilometres to a litre in city traffic conditions which is pretty good and is in sync with the company’s much famed “Fill it, Shut it and Forget It” tagline.
