Kia Carens
As per the latest official press release from Kia, it was confirmed that the Punjab Police took delivery of 71 specially customised Carens. These PBVs (Purpose Built Vehicles) will be used as Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) to provide immediate assistance to citizens during emergencies. The reasons for choosing Carens are multifold – availability of the latest tech and connectivity features, longer wheelbase, generous cabin space and powerful engine. This model has the 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The PBV includes High-Intensity Strobe lights, PA Systems, and ‘Dial 112 – Emergency Response Vehicle’ Decals.

Toyota Hilux
Punjab Police inducted 116 Toyota Hilux pickup trucks into its fleet recently. It is one of the most potent and capable pickup trucks in the country. Last Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann unveiled the Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF) at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) headquarters in Jalandhar. The force is equipped with 129 new vehicles to patrol the 5,500 km National Highway and State Highway network. These vehicles come with cutting-edge technology that allows them to directly connect with nearby trauma centers to assist accident victims.
With a 2.8-litre diesel engine similar to the Fortuner, this vehicle delivers an impressive 201 hp and 420 Nm of peak power and torque (or 500 Nm with automatic transmission) for optimal power and torque. Buyers have the choice between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Unlike the Fortuner, all Hilux models come with 4-wheel drive, and notably, they don’t offer a petrol engine option. The Hilux hits the market with a starting price of Rs 30.40 lakh, with prices ranging up to Rs 37.90 lakh, ex-showroom.

Hyundai Creta
Then there is the mighty popular Hyundai Creta mid-size SUV. Note that this is the pre-facelift model. Hyundai recently launched the new Creta in our market. Its immense popularity extends beyond just passenger vehicles. Even Police departments utilize it as a patrol vehicle. According to recent reports, the Chennai Police Department has included the Hyundai Creta in its fleet. Additionally, we’ve seen the Creta used by the Ladakh Police for its tourist wing. Thus, the Creta is frequently seen as a Police car on various occasions.
The original version of the Hyundai Creta came with three engine options: a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, and a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol. The diesel engine offers a choice between a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.5-litre petrol engine comes with a 6-speed manual and a CVT. The turbocharged petrol engine is paired with a 7-speed DCT. The naturally aspirated petrol engine produces a maximum power of 115 PS and a peak torque of 144 Nm, while the diesel engine offers 115 PS and 250 Nm of torque. The most powerful engine is the 1.4-litre turbo petrol unit, featuring direct injection and providing a maximum power of 140 PS and a peak torque of 242 Nm.

Tata Nexon EV
The Indian Police forces have started using electric cars in their fleet too. A few months back, we mentioned the Kolkata Police adding 226 Tata Nexon EVs to their lineup. These are the older models of Nexon EVs. The Nexon EV came in two versions – Prime and Max. The Prime version has a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, giving a range of 312 km. It has a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor that delivers 127 hp and 245 Nm of peak power and torque. On the other hand, the Nexon EV Max has a bigger 40.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, powering the same motor to produce 141 hp and 250 Nm of peak power. With the larger battery, it can go up to 453 km on one charge and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9 seconds.

Mahindra XUV700
Lastly, the Mahindra XUV700 joins this list too. Recently, the Maharashtra Police added 15 Mahindra XUV700 SUVs to their fleet. It’s the flagship model of the Indian auto giant. Packed with numerous active and passive safety features, the latest technological advancements, and plenty of comfort features, the XUV700 stands out. It is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers a maximum power of 200 PS and a peak torque of 380 Nm. Alternatively, the diesel engine comes in various states of tune. The lower-tier versions produce 155 PS and 360 Nm, while the higher-tier models offer 185 PS and 420 Nm of peak power and torque (450 Nm in the automatic variant). Both the petrol and diesel engine options come with a choice between 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The top variants also boast an AWD configuration and ADAS for active safety.
