Irregularities in Certification
Toyota Motor Corporation commissioned Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) to develop diesel engines for its vehicles. Recently, TICO reported to Toyota about irregularities found during the horsepower output certification testing for three diesel engines commissioned by Toyota. These irregularities stemmed from the use of different electronic control units (ECU) software during certification testing, creating smoother and less varied results.
Global Impact and Models Affected: A global statement by Toyota Motor Corporation revealed that ten models, including six in Japan, utilize the affected engines. Notably, in India, the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux together contribute to almost one-third of Toyota Kirloskar Motors’ total sales.
Nature of Irregularities:
Responding to queries, a Toyota Kirloskar spokesperson clarified that the irregularities specifically relate to the ‘smoothing’ of power and torque curves. Importantly, this doesn’t lead to any overstatements or claims regarding horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values. The spokesperson emphasized that these irregularities have no impact on the emissions or safety of the affected vehicles.
Impact on Customers and Waiting Period: While the delivery of the affected models has been temporarily suspended, Toyota Kirloskar Motor assures that production will continue. The company will also accept orders for the Innova, Fortuner, and Hilux. For vehicles already dispatched but undelivered, the company plans to transparently communicate the situation to customers, ensuring a seamless registration and delivery process for those still opting to receive their vehicles.
