It’s been more than 5 years since Honda launched the current City globally. It was getting a bit old in terms of design and losing out to competition in many markets thanks to newer products from rivals like Hyundai. The 2014 Honda City will be unveiled in Japan on 25th November to fix this problem, it will be launched in India in 2014, most probably at the Indian Auto Expo in February 2014.
The current generation of the Honda City was first launched in 2008, the car was already very popular thanks to Honda’s reputation as a manufacturer which was class above its rivals. The 2008 Honda City looked very sharp compared to its predecessor with angular headlamps which blended into the grille, tight surfaces, a side profile which looked like a ‘tensed arrow’ and new very well integrated tail-lamps. The interiors looked good, beige interiors kept many customers happy and the build quality was typical Honda. But competition ate into the City’s sales as people began preferring those cars offered diesel engines.
The 2014 Honda City, when launched in India will be offered with the same 1.5-litre DTEC diesel motor that does duty in the Honda Amaze. It will obviously be tuned for more power than the 99 BHP that it produces in the Amaze, but will at the same time be frugal as every other engine offered by Honda in India. The styling of the new Honda City will be evolutionary than revolutionary and is expected to be based off the Honda Jazz showcased earlier in 2013. The interiors will receive a serious upgrade and a plethora of features to compete against the Hyundai Verna. One thing is for sure, the Honda City will have one of the most spacious cabins in the segment, this we can be assured of after seeing what the company managed to pull off in the Honda Amaze.
Honda has stopped the production of the current generation of the City and dealers are clearing off stock, which means that there will be heavy discounts. Some dealer shave also started accepting deposits to book the 2014 Honda City, which will be only delivered after the launch of the car in February 2014.
