Mahindra Scorpio-N boasts of a 5-star Global NCAP rating. However, the popular SUV has received a 0-star rating in the A-NCAP crash tests.
Mahindra Scorpio-N is one of the most popular SUVs in the market. While its post-launch journey has not been smooth, customer interest remains is still quite strong. As Indian customers have become quite aware of the safety ratings, Mahindra has been boasting the 5-star Global NCAP score of Mahindra Scorpio-N. However, the SUV has now received a 0-star rating in the Australasian NCAP crash tests. The surprisingly low safety rating has caught everyone off-guard.

0 Stars at Australian NCAP
As per recent reports, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) recently conducted crash tests for the Mahindra Scorpio-N and the popular car received a shocking safety rating of zero stars. Apparently, the car got a zero-safety rating because the test model lacked an Advanced Driver Aids System (ADAS). The Australasian NCAP has a strict policy regarding car safety. If a car lacks ADAS, it is regarded as zero stars despite other safety features. So, even if a vehicle has good structural integrity, it will still get a 0-star ANCAP rating without an ADAS.
It is to be noted that the ANCAP test report mentions that the Mahindra Scorpio-N offers adequate protection for the driver’s chest and lower legs in the frontal offset (MPDB) test. It also provides good protection to critical body regions for both the driver and front passenger. Overall, the popular SUV offered a stable passenger compartment. Mahindra just needs to add the ADAS driver assistance feature to the Scorpio-N SUV to get a significantly higher score in a retest by the Australasian NCAP.

However, the report also raised concern for the driver’s chest during the full-width frontal test. It also noticed several issues with the driver seat belt unlatching during the side impact test. While the Scorpio-N scored satisfactory scores in dynamic and side dynamic tests, it showed mixed results in the child occupant protection test. Even the Global N-CAP report noted that the Mahindra Scorpio-N offers marginal protection for the driver’s and passengers’ chests. However, it provides good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s necks.

Mahindra Scorpio-N at Global NCAP
Mahindra Scorpio-N scored a perfect 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests. These tests were conducted in December last year under the new test protocol. In terms of adult occupant protection, it scored 29.25 out of 34 and in the child occupant protection section, it scored 28.94 out of 48. Mahindra Scorpio-N also performed very well in the Global NCAP crash tests in the side impact test with a deformable barrier. It scored 16 out of a total of 17 points. In the child occupant protection test, the popular SUV scored 28.93 points out of 49.

Author’s Note
Both crash test reports make it clear that the Mahindra Scorpio-N has a very stable body. Despite the new stricter Global NCAP rules, the SUV did quite well and probably just needs an ADAS to get a good A-NCAP rating. While there is a scope for improvement, a stable bodyshell is a good start. It is to be noted that the new Global NCAP measures the impact of a front crash test at a speed of 64 km/h and side crash impacts. The new guidelines are very strict about calculating the chest load readings on the crash test dummies. So, the 5-star rating of Mahindra Scorpio-N is quite impressive.
