Toyota, famous for its reliable vehicles and world-class hybrid tech, could soon introduce a 48V hybrid system in the Fortuner SUV. This is something I’ve been reading in various reports, even as the carmaker has been working on the next generation model. This technology is already in use in the Hilux and the Land Cruiser, The Fortuner looks like the next logical recipient. However, what we don’t know is if the hybrid system would debut on the current version of the upcoming full model replacement.

48V Hybrid System for Toyota Fortuner
Toyota came up with its new 48V hybrid system a couple of months back. The system was detailed in a comprehensive video on its official Youtube channel. It works in tandem with a Diesel engine to bring three key advantages – seamless stop-and-go-function, higher fuel mileage and improved water-crossing performance. The video even gives us a look at the three core components of the 48V system. These include – 48V motor, 48V battery, and DC-DC converter. This video even emphasises on the hybrid system’s benefits in city driving. The belt-driven generator enhances torque to ensure smooth and fast engine start without vibrations. This is particularly advantageous in city traffic.
Furthermore, the system contributes to improved fuel mileage by generating torque to alleviate engine strain. This enhances overall efficiency. The regenerative braking mechanism facilitates recharging the 48V battery through both engine and normal braking. The video highlights the system’s robust design for water crossing capabilities. The video emphasises the system’s waterproof features to withstand such challenges. Placing the 48V motor strategically to avoid contact with water, along with housing the DC-DC converter and the 48V battery inside the cabin, enhances the car’s water-wading performance.

Author’s Note
As of now, the new 48V hybrid system is exclusively available in the Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado. However, there are good chances that Toyota will introduce this system in the Toyota Fortuner. This move could significantly enhance the Toyota Fortuner’s wide popularity. The integration of this world-class hybrid system will not just improve the performance but even the fuel mileage. Moreover, it will even cut down the emissions. This will be in line with the ongoing push for curbing vehicular emissions.
