In the latest set of images, we catch another glimpse of the upcoming 5-Door Mahindra Thar. The competition in the realm of rugged and affordable off-road SUVs has intensified, especially with the recent introduction of the 5-door Maruti Jimny. Before this, the Thar held its undisputed leadership in this segment for years. As off-roading gain popularity, vehicles like the Thar and Jimny enable enthusiasts to explore remote areas with confidence. However, we’re yet to have a thoroughbred off-road SUV retailing this side of the Rs 20 lakh mark. This is exactly where the Scorpio N based upcoming offering can change things. 5-Door Mahindra Thar Spied
These images come from motor.roads on Instagram. In this particular post, they’ve captured a noteworthy moment where the 5-door version of this iconic SUV is spotted from various angles, including its rather huge side profile. Unfortunately, though, it continues to bear heavy camouflage. Despite this concealment, the distinctive silhouette of the vehicle is quite apparent. Most of the exterior features appear to be in line with the standard Thar, including LED taillights and a rear-mounted spare wheel. Notably, the side profile reveals the additional doors and extended length of this variant. We must say, the upcoming SUV looks at least as big as the Mahindra Scorpio N when seen in profile.

Specs
The upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar should have the same engine choices as its 3-door counterpart. This means it will be available with a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel and a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol. The turbo-diesel engine delivers a peak power of 130 hp and torque of 320 Nm, while the turbo-petrol engine offers 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Both engine options are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox, equipped with a low-range transfer case. Furthermore, the vehicle features a specialized center differential that can mechanically lock, enabling it to operate in a 4×4 configuration. The new model will share its underpinnings with the Scorpio N, which is the biggest reason for the big dimensions of the upcoming SUV. As for pricing, the existing Thar models have ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs 10.98 lakh to Rs 16.94 lakh. However, the 5-door version is expected to command a slight premium over these price points.

What We Think
It’s rather heartening to witness the expansion of this rather niche off-roading segment. Off-road enthusiasts are increasingly embracing adventure activities, leading to heightened demand for vehicles like the Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha, and Maruti Jimny. Historically, the Thar has been the segment leader, but it faces limitations in terms of cabin space and practicality. With the impending arrival of the 5-door version, this concern is set to be addressed. While it may still not be the most comfortable option in the price bracket, the extended wheelbase will provide ample space for the second row and cargo storage. We eagerly the launch of the upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar.
