Toyota Fortuner is the most popular 7-seat off-roading SUV in the country at the moment.
The next-gen Toyota Fortuner might boast a brand-new hybrid diesel engine for the first time. Toyota has been developing hybrid engines for a long time now. Essentially, it is bridging the gap between fully electric and traditional IC engines. While a lot of other legacy carmakers have leap-frogged directly to EVs, Toyota is still utilizing the full potential of hybrid powertrains. In fact, recent cars like the Innova Hycross have a strong hybrid petrol engine. Moreover, it has introduced this new hybrid diesel mill in the Hilux pickup truck in international markets. Therefore, we will most likely see it in the upcoming Fortuner too.

Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner Hybrid Engine
This video comes from carversal on YouTube. The YouTuber explains the construction and working of this new hybrid diesel mill. In this engine, there is a 48V system with a motor-generator setup. This replaces the alternator found in the SUV at the moment. It is mounted directly on top of the diesel engine. Hence, the power losses are minimal. The output goes through a DC-DC convertor where the voltage is increased. Finally, it is stored in a dedicated battery. From there, the power is supplied to the car as and when needed. This could be while starting the engine or while accelerating or to power the electric features.

In essence, the efficiency of the engine is enhanced with this boost from the electric powertrain. The YouTuber also mentions that there could be a 15% increase in mileage and around 10% increase in power. That is a great achievement. What is even more impressive is the fact that the taxes on hybrid vehicles are lower than on diesel vehicles. Hence, the overall price could come down by about 10%. Therefore, there are immense benefits of introducing this new hybrid diesel engine.

What We Think
Ever since the departure of the Ford Endeavour from our market, the Toyota Fortuner has been ruling the sales charts. There are no worthy rivals capable of taking on the mighty Fortuner. But the prices of the top model have crossed Rs 50 lakh, ex-showroom. To tackle that issue, a hybrid powertrain could reduce these prices significantly while offering better performance and fuel economy at the same time. This could be a great incentive for potential buyers to get their hands on their favourite SUV in this category. We shall have to wait a bit longer to experience it in the flesh.
