Anand Mahindra Childhood Memories Tweet
This latest tweet comes on the occasion of the farewell ceremony of Mumbai’s legendary Double Decker bus. Anand Mahindra writes, “Hello, Mumbai Police? I’d like to report the theft of one of my most important childhood memories.” This was his post on a tweet by The Time Of India which reads, “Last day of the iconic Double Decker Bus in Mumbai. Bus drivers, conductors and fans – commuters gathered to bid goodbye to non-AC diesel Double Decker Bus in Andheri.” The visuals tell the entire tale.

This Double Decker bus has been a trademark of Mumbai for decades now. These red buses used to carry local passengers from various parts of the Mumbai city. With a brimming population, this provided a great solution by increasing the seating capacity due to the additional compartment. With the advent of stricter emission norms, we are constantly having to say goodbye to old vehicles in every segment. This is one such case. The government is trying to get rid of diesel-powered vehicles in favour of electric or hybrid vehicles. Hence, there is, unfortunately, no place for this bus in today’s world.

What We Think
Even though all of us are not from Mumbai, we can still understand the emotions the entire city must be going through. Staying within the automobile parlance, we have seen so many revered vehicles being discontinued due to either emission or safety concerns. The most prominent example that comes to mind is the Maruti 800 car. It was one of the most successful cars in our country with immense emotions. But we see less of that on roads today. Similarly, the people of Mumbai will not see this Double Decker bus on their streets anymore. On the positive side, there will be buses which will be better for our environment going forward. We could find solace in that.
