Bharat NCAP will be enforced from October 1, 2023, after which all cars will be tested by this indigenous agency.
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari feels that there is no need to make 6 airbags compulsory after the implementation of Bharat NCAP. People are becoming more safety conscious. With 6 airbags as standard, the chances of cars scoring decent safety ratings are really high. As a result, the carmakers will most likely voluntarily offer their cars with 6 airbags and other safety features which are necessary to obtain a respectable safety rating. This will be a big step in the right direction for the Indian automobile industry going forward. Here are the details.

Bharat NCAP Safety with 6 Airbags
Nitin Gadkari has been vocal about making 6 airbags mandatory in all cars for a while now. However, the Indian Government introduced the Bharat NCAP instead. This doesn’t mandate automakers to equip their models with 6 airbags. But the new car buyers are focusing a lot on safety ratings. Hence, the carmakers will be left with no other option but to offer them as standard pretty soon. In addition, Gadkari is also conscious about incorporating alternative solutions in the automobile industry. Resultantly, he is ensuring that the city waste (rubber, plastic, etc.) is used with bitumen to lay down new highways and roads. Additionally, he is promoting the mass adoption of EVs too.

This evaluation will adhere to the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197 guidelines, which will determine a unified rating score by merging Adult Occupation and Child Occupation Protection scores. The evaluation process comprises several crucial assessments, such as a Front Offset test at 64 km/h with a 40% overlap, a Side Impact test at 50 km/h, and a Pole-Side Impact test at 29 km/h. In order to attain the highly sought-after 5-star safety rating, a vehicle must secure a minimum of 27 points in the Adult Protection category and 41 points in the Child Protection category.

What We Think
We are excited to be a part of this transformation. Just a few years ago, Indian consumers didn’t prioritize safety ratings when purchasing vehicles. However, the Tata Nexon changed this perception by becoming the first Indian car to receive a 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP. Since then, we have consistently seen cars, particularly those from Indian manufacturers, proudly displaying a full 5-star safety rating. Consequently, people now consider safety ratings a crucial factor when buying a car. Moving forward, it’s highly beneficial that we have our own agency to provide safety ratings. We anticipate that an increasing number of safety features will become standard across all car trims.
