Mercedes GLE 250 and C300 Stolen on Pretext of Free Service
In a surprising turn of events, Mohammed Iqbal Qayyum Siddiqui posed as a Mercedes Auto-Hangar Showroom and Service Centre representative. Visiting the Malabar Hill residence of Nilesh Pavitralal Mehta, he offered enticing free denting, painting, and servicing deals to loyal customers. Leveraging this ruse, Siddiqui managed to take away Mehta’s prized possessions – a Mercedes GLE 250 and a Mercedes C300, along with essential documents and duplicate keys.
After promising a swift return within four days, Siddiqui provided various excuses for the delay. Later, though, an auto dealer from Pune got in touch with Mehta to inquire about the final selling price of the vehicles. He told Mehta that Siddiqui has already collected Rs 50,000 from him as commission for the sale of these vehicles. It was at this point that Mehta realised his cars are on sale in Pune. He quickly lodged a complaint with the police, unraveling the web of deceit spun by the imposter. A case under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code was swiftly registered against Siddiqui. Despite his convincing demeanor, the truth caught up with him, with multiple cheating cases attributed to his name. The chase is on as law enforcement seeks to bring him to justice.
Speaking on the modus operandi of the accused, a police officer said, “He even asked for original papers and duplicate keys to the vehicle, claiming they would be required to be scanned. Mehta handed him the RC Book, insurance certificate and other papers along with its duplicate keys. After the four days passed, Mehta called Siddiqui and enquired about his cars. Siddiqui told him that one of his cars had been sent to Thane as there was an issue with its sunroof. Meanwhile, work was underway on the other. The next day, Mehta again called him for an update, but he did not get a proper reply and was instead told that he would get both his vehicles on August 17.”

What We Think
This peculiar incident serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to execute their fraudulent schemes. We urge all car owners to verify things if they ever come in contact with such lucrative offers by someone claiming to be an employee of an authorised dealership.
